Re: New locomotives will cut Amtrak travel time from Chicago
Illinois State Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn says the new locomotives will reach speeds as high as 110 mph and cut an hour off of the near 6-hour trip from Chicago to St. Louis. In a news release, Amtrak says the 4,400-horsepower engine will be able to get trains moving at a clip of 125 mph.
So which is it 110 or 125? Oh wait the track is only good for 110 but..
What smells like lube oil and diesel.... Oh wait it's just my "Locomotive Breath"

Quite simple. The locomotives will reach speeds of 110 mph, because that's the line speed. Without the line speed limit, they can get up to 125 mph.SousaKerry wrote:Illinois State Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn says the new locomotives will reach speeds as high as 110 mph and cut an hour off of the near 6-hour trip from Chicago to St. Louis. Do they take the Rock and get on the UP Joliet sub to st Louis or do they take the Heritage Corridor "CN Joliet sub" and then continue. Or do they take a completely different route now.

The STL trains all follow the former Alton (GM&O) route from downtown to STL. CN has it north of Joliet, UP south.
