Hmm...that's a good one. With that railing it appears to now be a pedestrian bridge, and it looks to be a house in the background. Since it's a swing bridge, it's likely to be a major river, like the Grand, that was used in an era when moving people and goods by water was the norm.

That is a business in the background. Probably 1/4 mile away.

In Michigan. If you know the significance of these particular switch stands, it narrows it down to at least the RR. This one was recently replaced after probably 120 years of service.

Muskegon, Berry Junction area? Looks a lot like the switchstand here:
I was just riding my bike around Berry junction this past weekend and the background scenery looks familiar.

Yes, indeed its Berry Junction in Muskegon Township, Muskegon County. Passenger train service between Muskegon and Hart/Pentwater discontinued many years ago.

It is Berry Junction. This type of switch stand was unique to the Pere Marquette, in Michigan, and used a semaphore instead of a rotating target in its original configuration. They were manufactured by US Wind Engine & Pump Co, a company that was known more for well pumps, windmills and related components, but built railroad related accessories as well. The last patent date on that switch stand was 1903. I would be willing to bet that this Berry Junction stand was about the last one left in service, in Michigan. The gearbox on top is the giveaway when looking at them.
