Riding the Waves into Manistee
Riding the Waves into Manistee
Another abundance of pictures from Manistee, the folder actually has 800 files in it from this single day. Sure doesn't feel like I click the shutter that much.
8/09/11
Looking north from First Street Beach.
The sailboat turned around and went back in.
Should be the S.S. City of Milwaukee sailing by.
Working on some docks downtown.
State flag flying proudly in the wind.
Heading north.
Big Dipper. That's not a hot pixel on the horizon above the pier, it's the boat.
Enjoy.

Re: Riding the Waves into Manistee
Great pictures.
A couple questions. In the 5th pic, the Manistee appears to be crosswise of the channel. In the 6th pic down, it looks like the Manistee hit the breakwall. In the next picture, there is a different breakwall in the background with a lighthouse and people waving, and the lake looks much calmer. Is this the same day? What's the story.
I'm glad they have kept a few of the smaller classic lakers around, to get into places like Manistee, Alpena and Saginaw.
The new 1000 footers aren't very photogenic.
What's up with Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and the barge full of old logs?

Here's a screenshot of the piers from the GPS with the Manistee arriving 12/30/11.
I was standing on the south break wall where it elbows. The yellow line is the direction the camera was pointed for pictures 5 and 6. Green line for picture 7 and the orange line for 8. The blue line is about the direction the waves were coming in. The angle on the south pier is what kept the white caps out of the harbor. Hope that helps.
I had never seen the little barge before so it was picture worthy. I did not see what kind of work they were doing but I think in picture 14 where the Manistee is making its way through the channel, on the left side you'll see an orange crane on a barge along the docks by the condos. I think the crane was pulling out old dock pilings and putting them on the little barge and then that was taking them somewhere in Manistee Lake.
It is great to see the smaller classic lakers. I say this one looks better in the gray and white paint than its former color, has a fitting name too.
Missing the Maumee though.

As always Brandon, one excellent set!
Re: Riding the Waves into Manistee
Thanks for the explanation. Obviously it's all in the camera angles. Always enjoy your pics. I get up to Manistee in the summer. I think I would be a little nervous keeping my boat in a slip along the river.

No problem. I've seen the Manistee get about a foot away from the docks behind the Manistee Inn. Bet that made the charter fishing guys in their boat nervous since they were in between freighter and the wall for the river walk. Talk about using the bow thruster, had the mud just stirring.hoborich wrote:Thanks for the explanation. Obviously it's all in the camera angles. Always enjoy your pics. Thanks, I have plenty of winter time pictures still to keep you in season. hahaGrandTrunkFan wrote:Awesome pictures! Making me miss summer though...

Not to change the subject, but I saw a freighter upbound in Lake St Clair last week. I thought they laid up in the winter. Or do they keep running until ice up? Anybody know?

As far as I know as long as there's no ice they'll keep running.hoborich wrote:Not to change the subject, but I saw a freighter upbound in Lake St Clair last week. I thought they laid up in the winter. Or do they keep running until ice up? Anybody know?

Re: Riding the Waves into Manistee
The lock in the SOO are closed, but the rest of the great lakes are open if its passable. They use icebrekers to enter harbors, clear the straits on Mackinaw, ect. In fact, the ice breaker Mackinac was built to big to leave the Great Lakes
Re: Riding the Waves into Manistee
I knew the Soo Locks were closed. They do their annual maintainance in the winter. That would rule out iron ore this time of year. But they do carry stone and coal below the locks.

Re: Riding the Waves into Manistee
This time of year stone and sand slows because of the freeze, but isn't unheard of. Salt and coal are pretty frequent. Don't quote me on that thoughhoborich wrote:I knew the Soo Locks were closed. Looks like they fish out old logs from that got lose the giant rafts they used to float across the lake 100 plus years ago. This old growth stuff is extremely valuable and the waters preserve them just wonderfully. Some people do this as a full time business.
Re: Riding the Waves into Manistee
Last week there were two vessels still hauling road salt(the Algowood and John B. Aird). The Manistee hauled salt until a week or so ago. Ore pellets are shipped out of Escanaba late. This year the Wilfred Sykes and the Joseph L. Block did such until last week.
