Another colorful day of railfanning on the Main Line Sub.

Unread post by jhnmrkowens »

After losing an hour of sleep last night with the time change, I was still up early this morning, ready to catch some action. Q573 showed up just after 9, behind CSX 9026 and CSX 936.

K562 was 20 minutes behind Q573, with RJ Corman 8799 and RJ Corman 3805 for power. Q573 went to Bonnieville and K562 went to Sonora for Q574 and Q282 to come north. Q574 passed by at 10 with CSX 4825 and CSX 5246, Q282 was 10 minutes behind with CSX 781 and CSX 7794.

Thanks to a heads-up on Q275, coming out of Louisville, I knew that they featured a pair of BNSF Dash-9's for power. I first shot them coming along Gaithers Station Road at 11:35 with BNSF 4449 and BNSF 5219, they had a whopping 990' of train.

Like yesterday's chase of the UP's, I chased them south to Munfordville for a shot of them passing Harper's Cemetery.

After they passed by, I continued south for one more shot as Q275 passed through Cave City.

I returned home after that, and it was a pretty quiet afternoon. K562 came back north through Glendale at 3:25 behind RJ Corman 8799 and RJ Corman 3805 still. Along with the empty aluminum bulkheads, they had 5 empty sand gondolas, which was a first for me south of Louisville.

Later in the afternoon at 6:10, I caught Q235 coming south out of Glendale behind one of CSX's few SD70ACe's. CSX 4844 and CSX 7923 were up front.

About an hour later, and after the clouds had covered the sun, I caught Q201 at the same spot behind UP 3912 and CSX 7590.

J765 was about 10 minutes behind Q201, with CSX 6932 and CSX 2298 for power.

This wrapped up one of the better railfanning weekends, that I've had in awhile. I hadn't seen so much foreign power in a long time.

Thanks for your postings on a subject that means a lot to me. I used to live alongside the Main Line Sub from 2002-2004. Am headed back to southern Kentucky this summer to visit some friends. Will probably drive down to Amqui (Nashville) for a day as well. Just out of curiosity, would you be able to supply me with a current list of all CSX Q trains that run the Main Line Subdivision? According to my records, I show:

Q201
Q205???
Q210
Q211
Q212
Q220
Q235
Q237
Q275
Q282
Q284

Q502
Q525
Q526????
Q534
Q573
Q574
Q578

Plus my personal favorite was always the K514.

How's my list compared to reality???

Thanks...........

Your list is pretty much accurate.

Q201, Q211, Q235, Q237, Q275, Q525 and Q573 are our southbounds. But, as for the northbound autoracks (210, 212, 220, 282 and 284), there is no telling on their letter, depending on routing to the Main Line, sometimes, L, Q or X. I wouldn't consider Q205 a scheduled train, I may have caught him once this year. And, the 212 doesn't run daily either, but it fairly frequent. The Q502, Q534, Q574 and Q578 are dailies as well. When the economy went down several years ago, Q525, Q526 and Q578 were annulled, now that it is back up, only Q525 and Q578 were brought back.

The K514 was also annulled several years ago, and put onto Q573. Now, they are running K514 again though. Also, you've got K562 running from Louisville to Memphis Junction and back with the RJ Corman aluminum train.

Once a month, we see a southbound coal train, it runs in the T200-series. Depends on where it is loaded.

Several grain trains, and every-once-in-a-while we'll see a phosphate train.

J765 and J768 are the locals from Louisville to BG. J756 and J759 are BG locals, with Y110 being a yard-job.

Thanks, John. I really appreciate you getting back with me! Thanks for the clarifications, too. I'm really surprised they annulled Q525/Q526 between Nashville and Louisville when the economy was down. Things must have been worse than I had thought. Last time I was down that way was December of 2007 when traffic was still at its 'pre-recession' levels.

There was a Q202 running for awhile as well, it may still be around. On an average day on the Main Line, I'll see around 8 trains, on very good days, that number will be 12-14. It's busy in the mornings and the afternoons, with one or two trains every couple hours during the day.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm glad that you guys are enjoying them!

As for the cemetery, it hasn't been added to in years and is fairly old. There are only like two names in there, may have been a family cemetery, who knows.
