Curious how a railyard is cross-docking. Cross docking is taking freight off one transport mode and sorting it to a destination.
Then it's placed back on the same or another transport mode. Railyards aren't made for that kind of activity.

They have been unloading tank cars in Mason, either using the siding across the main from the engine house or on the old team track between the engine house and the old depot.

Random question about their JAIL services, but they've said forever on the website that they offer cross docking, transloading & team tracks. Where are any of these services located along the line, particularly the cross docking & team tracks? Do they mean they provide cross docking services indirectly? I'm confused.
Transloading & team tracks are primarily in Mason. By the enginehouse and Michigan Packaging.
I imagine the team track/transload is the one you can see at Michigan Packaging; but what is done near the enginehouse? Doesn't look like there is any properties with direct truck access to the line that are used as such, accept maybe the enginehouse, itself.

It seems like my gut was right that there are most aspirational services than some kind of developed infrastructure. And it also strikes me that because of the very nature of rail, that saying they offer cross-docking is kind of redundant. A railyard, itself, is literally cross-docking.
I think you do not understand exactly what transloading is. It is not exclusive to a building, it can be done virtually anywhere.

Americhem unloads tank cars sporadically by the engine house in Mason and a company transloads oil/petroleum products by Shafer Redi-Mix and Greif. This latter mystery company has also recently started transloading by the engine house.

Transloading does not require a building or even a dock. Just a track with a patch of dirt next to it that's large enough to park a semi truck next to the railcar.

I think we all agree transloading is defined as exchanging commodities between rail cars and trucks by any means possible.

However, cross docking is the term usually reserved when a commodity is unloaded at a dock (like in a warehouse).

So when a railroad advertises they have “cross docking “ service the assumption is they have a dock/warehouse on their line.

lol, what? The original question was already answered, and wasn't super-specific to begin with. Calm down.

SD40M-2: ADBF 821, ex-DLCX 3127, exx-CEFX 3127 (Rebuilt SD40-2), exxx-SP 7458 (SD45R), nee-SP 8821 (SD45). Order # 7887. Built 08/1966. Serial: 32012. Frame: 7887-22.
It arrived in Southeast Michigan yesterday or the day before. In CEFX blue with white stripes but still with the DLCX mark and 3127 number. It’ll probably take a few days to find it’s way to Jackson for interchange. Has a horizontal nose headlight assembly.

Where are you seeing this information? Not questioning you at all, just curious if there are any pics of it, since ADBF’s purchase of it?

Facebook. And it currently looks just like GLC 329, albeit with DLCX reporting marks and no GLC markings.

I see a lot of comments on Facebook and some comments on here about this new to ADBF/JAIL 6-axle unit will be tearing up the rail line or spreading the rails. Can someone explain to me why that might be the case? Everything I am finding and my math shows that a 6 axle SD40-2 has a lighter pounds per axle weight and a lighter pounds per lineal foot (if you want to spread the weight out over the length of the truck) than the 4-axle GP9, even though it is a much heavier unit. If my math is right, the SD40-2 has 61,333 pounds per axle while the GP9 has 64,875 pounds per axle. I know the axles are close together on the trucks, so that is why I also calculated a pounds per lineal foot over the length of each truck. SD40-2 = 6,772 PLF per truck (27'-2" 1st to 3rd axle) and the GP9 = 14,416 PLF per truck (9' axle to axle). I am not trying to start arguments, just trying to learn, because I am obviously not a railroader.

First new loco is in Jackson as of this morning. Most likely a night run tonight to go get it plus anything else.

The rigid wheelbase of a 3 axle truck is longer than that of a 2 axle truck, which could be a problem on a very tight curve, and the overall weight of the 6 axle loco is more.

However, Conrail & NS ran 6 axle engines on this line on a regular basis, so I suspect it will be just fine.

Your explanation on the length of the trucks makes sense as well as the overall weight. I was kind of thinking the same thing, that even though the weight per axle is less, the total weight being applied is a lot greater.

If relevant or related, The Railmark Transload on the Detroit Connecting RR has what appears to be a record amount of tanks.

Oh, so the Railmark Transload is active again? Interesting...
