Ex-DW&P Engines

Unread post by AARR »

Hi Tom, welcome to RailroadFan.com. I started a new thread for your question.

In addition to the SD40's DW&P also had four of the ex-RI GP38-2's although I can't recall which numbers. The GP38-2's are still in service somewhere on the CN system perhaps even occasionally in MI. But the SD40's are all gone although many if not most are still in service on other railroads.

I'm new to the group. I'm actually wondering if any DWP units still exist? The last units they owned were SD40's 5902-5911, ex-GTW. I've seen some pictures of them painted in the CN scheme with DWP subletters and others that have been scrapped.
Thanks

I don't believe any locomotives were sublettered for DW&P.
They did have their own locomotives but are long retired.

Realizing some members are younger than me, okay most are
A lot of the CN quirks are because CN was a Crown Corporation.
That means it was owned by the Canadian Government.
Imagine the fun that could occur when one nation owns a company in another nation.

While waiting to be corrected about DW&P sublettering, I'm off to look for more pictures :D

Edit: that was quick, I did find a photo of a DW&P (5902 and 5904) sublettered locomotive.

The DWP SD40s that were repainted into CN colors did receive DWP sublettering, but as others have said, they were retired probably going on 20 years ago. I know they did have some GP38-2s and maybe a few GP38ACs transferred from GTW, but I’m not sure if any of the Geeps were actually relettered for DWP.

The GTW #5850-#5853 were on the DW&P for a while and lettered DW&P in the mid 80's.

Thanks guys much appreciated. I have the DWP Morning Sun book and it got me wondering, what if any DWP units were still out there running around. Figured the SD40's would have been scrapped by now I just wasn't sure, it looks like they made it into the early 2000's.

Here are the DWP painted locomotives. There were of course GTW units assigned to DWP but not repainted. Reading the Morning Sun book is interesting how the DWP, GTW and CV swapped locomotives. The SD40's and GP38-2's did run around with GTW markings for awhile before being repainted into the DWP, Deliver with Pride scheme. 5902, 5904 and 5907 did get repainted into the CN North America scheme with DWP sublettering.

RS-11's 3600-3614
SD40's 5902-5911
GP38-2's 5850-5853

In 1977 3600-3605,3609,3611-3612, & 3614 were swapped with the CV, who sent 10 GP9's to GTW, who sent SD40's 5904-5911 to DWP.
In 1983 the 5 remaining RS-11's were sent to the CV, who sent 4 GP9's to GTW, who sent GP38-2's 5850-5853 to the DWP.
In 1986 the GP38-2's were returned to the GTW and repainted back to GTW.
In 1989 SD40's 5902-5903 were picked up by the DWP.

Thanks again
Tom
