Algoma F40 in CN Battle Creek yard

Unread post by dmitzel »

Hopefully someone can shoot this one...

Riding this morning's AMTK 365 there is a westbound CN consist at the west end of CN's Battle Creek yard - three units, with the middle unit an Algoma F40PH.

Caught me by surprise so no photo here, and the notoriously dirty Horizon windows wouldn't have helped anyway. Happy hunting on the South Bend Sub!

Where is this loco headed? I know Algoma Central® has shut down operations; I hope they will come back!!!! People living along the line have it "Hard" in the "Wilderness" without the "Tour of the Line" passenger train servicing them! What will happen to the equipment? I have never seen these units, but rode ACR 6ix times─1995 through 2005!!!!

OK, here's a picture of an Algoma Central® F40PH pulling a CN "Test Train," 4/24/2016, Mount Albert, ON (photo by Neil Barratt):  Image

Here's a (35mm Canon® S.L.R.) photo my Dad (RCJ I) took─our first time riding ACR "Snow Train" reversing ends, Agawa Canyon, ON, 2-4-1995:

I about crap when I read that as I had not heard that it had shut down. I was up 15 years ago when the WC SD45's pulled the train. I'd like to go up and ride it again as the Canyon Train was fun ! The train is the only way in/out to some of the place along the route.

Isn't there also a CN local passenger train that serves that route and then some 2-3 days a week?

This is the train that was shut down. The government no longer wanted to subsidize it. The Agawa trains continue uninterrupted.

We rode the Agawa Canyon train in September. The Hearst train no longer operates. Neither does the Snow train. There was not much sign of freight activity online. About halfway to Canyon one of the sidings held a number of coil steel cars. There were two pulpwood loading sites, one of which had a few cars. A crew member told me that current traffic is one freight each way, per day. They run at night during the tourist season, so as to keep out of the way of the Canyon train.

OK, at least something will stay!!!! Why was the "Algoma" F40 in Battle Creek? Are they using the ACR locos for other trains during the "Off Season?"

Since it is technically a CN locomotive, it's probably going to Homewood for work.

If you like the late, great Algoma Central, here are two pix from my slides:
1. F40 #104 before it was repainted from Ski Train colors, leading the Hearst train #2 near Heyden, Ontario, 8-12-2011 with heater car #78 (ex DRG 253, nee PB-1 6002) and three ex-ATSF cars.

2. F-unit 1752 leads two others with the Canyon train near Bellvue, Ontario in September, 1998
