Michigan Cabooses

Unread post by caboose9 »

Hi,

There's a wood, cupola, caboose at the Brimley Railroad Museum that I think is a GTW car. Is it? Number?

There's a wood, cupola, GTW 77000 series caboose at Bahlau's Golden Nugget Restaurant, 7203 US 12, Sand Lake, Irish Hills, Cambridge Township. Anyone know the number?

Also in Cambridge Twp., there's a wood, cupola, caboose at the Stagecoach Stop Amusement Park, US 12, Sand Lake, Irish Hills, reported as GTW? and as NYC? Which is correct? Number?

Thanks, Roger

*** The caboose was stored in Negaunee, Michigan, and was moved to Chasssell, Michigan! ***

Hi,

Steel, cupola, NP 1136/10136/BN 10297 is reported as "David Pulse, 39105 Fishermans Lane, Chassell, MI", & as "CR 480, east of Negaunee, MI".

The double listing could be a relocation of the same caboose or an error in one of the numbers due to the publication of an erroneous cross reference for this 1962 series of NP to BN cabooses in Del Grosso, Rbt. C, 1993, Burlington Northern Caboose Book: Bonners Ferry, ID, Great Northern Pacific Pubs., p. 35.

Does anyone know if there are NP/BN cabooses at both locations and the BN number of one or both of the cabooses?

Thanks, Roger

Caro, MI, caboose?

Unread post by caboose9 »

Hi,

There's a wood, cupola, caboose with no trucks that is/was for sale "somewhere in/near Caro, MI". The caboose was said to have come to Caro "from the Dakotas".

Has anyone seen or heard of this caboose? Is it still in Caro? If yes, what is the address? If not, where did it go?

Cheers, Roger

Hi,

Wood, cupola, B&O C2278 caboose moved from Texas Corners, MI, to Coloma, MI, over 15 years ago and was resold and moved again about 5 years ago.

Where did B&O C2278 move to?

Thanks, Roger

Hi,

Wood, cupola, GTW 77963 and steel, bay window, NS X381?/SOU 910808 MWM cabooses, Coopersville, MI, have been listed as for sale for 4 or 5 years.

Are they still for sale in Coopersville or have they been sold and moved?

Thanks, Roger

To my knowledge SOU 910808 is not for sale, that's our "office" if you will. I believe GTW 77963 is privately owned and stored back in the old Delphi plant so I can't say if it's for sale or not.

Hi,

Conrail Jon said, "To my knowledge SOU 910808 is not for sale."

Hi,

Along with not being for sale, there is another problem or two with the report on this caboose.

NS 381, no X, would be a steel, bay window, built from a boxcar, caboose from the old Norfolk Southern:

http://www.norfolksouthernhs.org/images ... kNS-TL.jpg and the SOU 910808 was, in fact, the former

NS 381 bay window car with one or both bays replaced by a side door .

Clearly, the Coopersville car is a more modern Southern caboose with a bay window, not a side door, at least on one

side: http://www.railroadmichigan.com/cm012.jpg .

So, the Coopersville caboose in neither the NS 381 nor the 910808! One reporter said it was SOU 910804 but I lean

toward that not being correct either!

Does anyone have any better idea of the former number(s) of this ugly duckling?

Thanks, Roger

Michigan Caboose

Unread post by caboose9 »

Hi,

Actually, there's the possibility that the Southern bay window caboose at Coopersville could be 910808 (2nd), replacing the old NS 381/910808 MWM.

Are there photos of the car at Coopersville as SOU 910808?

There should be some photos out there. Maybe Robby's scrapbook. It was named for EG KIng. It appeared to be assigned to the Engineering Department. It had a "motion table" whch appered to have been connected to monitring equipment and recording apparatus which I assumed was for slack action research.

Years ago, I got the NS to donate a that caboose and flatcar to the Coopersville & Marne. The caboose was used for testing as raildudesdad said and had a generator in one part. I can't recall the number on it. But I worked with the NS, Conrail, and GRE to route and waybill it. Seems to me we had to pay Conrail $400 for their portion of the move. I might still have a copy of the donation papers at home someplace. That was about 18 years ago......

There's a caboose, wood, cupola, painted as "Train City USA" in Bangor, MI.

There's a steel caboose at the Depot restaurant in Grant, MI that used to be orange, but I believe it is now in Chessie Paint.

Bangor - B&O C2187.

Grant - C&O 90680, built by C&O in 1924, converted to a steel car by C&O in 1956. A rare car as one of four wood cabooses converted to steel cabooses by C&O of which two are preserved. The other is C&O 90665 which was converted to a steel, wide vision cupola, caboose in 1959 and is preserved in Huntington, WV.

There are 4 cabooses in Galesburg, MI, reported as "Dr. James Smith, S. 38th St., south of town". They are:

Steel, cupola, ATSF? #? to GTW 75???;

Wood, cupola, GTW 77028, from Coopersville, MI;

Wood, cupola PM A609 to C&O A609, from Reed City, MI;

Are these 4 cabooses still at this location? Does anyone know the missing road numbers? Are there any photos of these cars on the Internet?

Thanks, Roger

Hi,

RR? #?, steel or wood?, cupola or bay window?, Pool House, Treat Hwy. & Codling Rd.

Except for the railroad of origin, road number, composition, and style, this is a complete report!

Any help with the minor details will be appreciated.

Kimball, MI, Cabooses

Unread post by caboose9 »

Hi,

At one time at least eight GTW cabooses were purchased and moved to the property of the Port Huron KOA, 5111 Lapeer Rd., Kimball, MI. At least 1 of these, GTW 79180, was sold and moved to Jeddo, MI.

A report made about 5 years listed 7 cars including two that were thought to have been sold but not yet removed from the KOA property: ATSF 1707 to GTW 75001, ATSF 1583 to GTW 75004, ATSF 1740 to GTW 75005 (1) (sold?), ATSF 1537 to GTW 75006 (sold?), GTW 79051, GTW 79052, & GTW 79059. The ex-ATSF cars are steel, cupola models and the other 3 are steel, wide vision cupola models.

Which of these hacks are still at the at the Port Huron KOA?

Thanks, Roger
