353 struck vehicle at MP MH 19.7, Hannan Road, west end of Wayne. Multiple fatalities in vehicle.

350 was to terminate at JXN, but change of plans.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - An accident between a car and a train has shut down two roads in Canton Township.

There are reports of serious injuries as part of the accident.

The accident has closed both Hannan and Lotz roads between Michigan Avenue and Van Born Road. This is in the area of Michigan Ave. and I-275.

5 teens killed trying to beat Amtrak train at Canton Twp. crossing Police say five teens are dead after they drove around a crossing gate and were hit by an Amtrak passenger train this afternoon.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - 5 young adults have been killed in an accident between a car and an Amtrak passenger train in Canton Township.

According to Amtrak, train 353 was traveling westbound when it hit the car. The train is the regularly scheduled outbound train from Pontiac to Chicago. It was just west of the Dearborn Station at the time of the accident. 170 passengers and 4 crew members were on the train at the time of the accident.

Amtrak says there were no injuries on the train. Passengers will be taken by bus to the Ann Arbor station to board another train.

I just heard the story on the radio, however they said only 4 dead. Sad day when the gene pool gets thinned out in this manner.

As a parent - this kind of thing is a huge nightmare. One act of stupidity and it's all over - and for four of the kids the "act of stupidity" that got them killed was letting their friend with poor judgement drive them...

i'm sure it was amtrak's fault, i good attorney will find that amtrak was 5 minutes late, and if they were on time those poor kids would'nt have been there, so it was amtrak's fault for running a train at the same time they crossed the tracks and delayed them for what maybe 10 seconds.....

WXYZ is saying according to witnesses they drove around the gates. 5 dead, 4 boys ages 17-18 and a 14 y/o girl. The pictures are incredible. The car darn near disnintegrated.

The question is: How many more people are going to die before they realize that:
A. They can't beat the train
B. There's no reason to be in such a hurry that you can't wait for a train (especially a short Amtrak one).
and
C. More than just you suffer when you make such an amazingly stupid decision.

Until people finally start thinking for themselves, they will continue to die.

Does anyone have the total number of fatalities, both accident and suicide, that have occurred on this line over the past five years or so? It must be a high figure and would perhaps endow the Michigan line with the honor of being the deadliest in the country.

A. They can't beat the train

Actually, 99% of the people who go around the gates, never get hit by a train. That's the problem. Most of the time they DO beat the train, hence the reason why people are so apt to go around the gates. Every once in awhile someone gets 'surprised' by a fast moving train, and it makes headlines.

Also, someone going around the gates is no different than someone making a left turn across traffic. Its a game of 'chance'. Can I make it? This case, they didn't.

Probably, teen who watch to learned as like copycat from that parent drove round the gates.

"Call Police we just hit a car"

And then turned off the radio. Scary thing was I was only minutes from going to catch her at Haggerty.
