This has been quite a shock to many and seemed to have come out of no where despite being in the works for some time according to some of my sources. Good to see some of these pieces that UP seems to no longer have interest in or time for get a home that will definitely see good things happen. With steam friendly Iowa Interstate as the host, who knows where these Machines will run to.

Why did UP give up 3985 in the first place?

It was due for an overhaul and UP was focused on getting 8014 running. They've said since that they’re unlikely to keep more than 2 steamers operating at a time and with 844 rumored to be in need of an overhaul that's where they're going to focus given the historical significance of 844 being the oldest continuously active steam locomotive.

The last UP steam crew had 3985 held together with bubblegum and scotch tape. They have more than enough on their plate with 4014 and 844.

Very happy to see these donated and even happier to see that all 3 of the donated locomotives will run again.

This has been in the works for years. The timing of the announcement might be coincidental to distract from the grill-fest, but stuff like this doesn’t happen over night.

Not really sure what the apparent hostility is here to the STB hearings, given that the railroad’s problems are well documents and are a national disgrace.

That being said, it’s doubtful that this deal was spur of the moment either…something like this takes time ..

844 had a major overhaul of the boiler and running gear in the last 10 years, so it should be good to go. With 4014 taking up much of the crew's time it hasn't been out much either, averaging one or two runs a year. 844 is not the oldest continuously active steam locomotive by any means, but its the last to not be retired by a Class 1.
