KENDALLVILLE, Ind. (AP/WANE) -- Police in Kendallville, Indiana say a man in a wheelchair was killed when he was struck by a train at a railroad crossing.
Kendallville Police Chief Rob Wiley said the man was taking the sidewalk over the crossing near the city's downtown when he was hit by the freight train at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. He has been identified as 41-year-old Anthony Sills. He's also known as Ray.
Witnesses told police the railroad crossing gates were down across traffic lanes and that its warning lights and bells were working as the train approached in the city about 25 miles north of Fort Wayne. It appears Sills drove his motorized wheelchair onto the train tracks, stopped and was hit by the train.
The train stopped after the collision and remained there for hours while police investigated.
Those who knew Anthony Sills said he would travel on his motorized wheelchair often over those tracks and it wasn't uncommon for him to get stuck.
"It's just so sad that his life ended here on these tracks," said Nan Eminger.
Police are hopeful that the video from the camera mounted on the front of the train is the evidence they need to find out what happened. They expect to review that video sometime this week.
"The railroad company is getting those developed for us and we'll be looking at those with them and hopefully that can give us a little more indication of exactly what the movement was of the individual," said Chief Wiley.
In the meantime, people said they won't forget Sills.
e was an awesome guy, very nice, he had a big heart, big soul, everyone loved him, he's going to be missed," said Eminger.
