Greenwich, OH railfanning

Unread post by Lyle Sanderson »

Is Greenwich, OH a good spot to railfan with photo's, video and possible drone? I looked at the outline of the crossings in Greenwich and found the area immediately northeast of the diamond as a triangle of open space and wonder if it is available to park and photo. If not, does anyone know of a safe spot to spend 4-6 hrs of time.

In my couple visits here. It is a decent and safe to hang out and watch trains. There is roughly 50 trains a day on CSX and occasional WLE stone train as well. The crossing is safe and is pretty decent for photos and video. Here is some of the many trains that pass Greenwich on a daily basis

Of course I might forgetting some trains. But there is unit coal trains, grain trains, oil trains as well on a daily basis. Not to mention I might be forgetting locals that run on the lines. But yeah you will not get skunked and is a good spot to railfan. 75 percent of the trains are either transferring between the ex Conrail and Baltimore and Ohio lines. It is also a very safe spot to park. Just be smart and dont do anything stupid. In my last visit they had a huge work block as MOW was working on the diamond. CSX workers really did not mind me filming the trains. Just take the precautions and be smart. Dont get so close to the tracks when a train is coming as etc. Park closer to the road near the diamond. Dont park near the diamond.

What i used to do is get outta work on Friday night drive to Fostoria stay there awhile then to Willard stay there for awhile then end up at Greewich get there at 3am Saturday morning recline the seat back take a nap then at about 10am leave there and go to Spencer Ohio. I never was bothered at Greenwich the last time i did that was on Labor Day weekend of 2007.

Train counts will obviously be somewhat less as you move east of the diamond, but there are some nice scenic spots just to the east of Greenwich on the old B&O main in the vicinity of Ruggles. Wish the old CPL signals were still out there, but the crews and MofW probably appreciate the modern signal network lol

Wish I could do that more and more these days. With most of the trains running at night these days it is very beneficial to camp or sleep in the car. Sadly my parents will not let me. Although sometimes I railfan way past 9 pm and end up back home way after 10 pm. You are only young once.
