Junkyard between Hoytville and Deshler

Unread post by Huelsy'sTrainBlog »

I was wondering if anyone knows the origin for the name Junkyard for the set of signals between Hoytville and East Deshler. Any help would be great!

I thought it was the folks that live on the east side of the road adjacent to the tracks that have a bunch of junk in their backyard.

Thanks! I find that quite funny! Along the old Panhandle Route just west of Urbana is a house (trailer) on a bridge across the creek! They use the single track brige as a drive way then the house is on the double track bridge!

Yep, Bair Road. The other end of the interlocking was GARRET, at South Heck Hill Rd. I do have a photo of the house but it's in print, not digital. Really interesting.

It is very interesting indeed. Do you know of any other weird places like that house or things like why Junkyard is refered to as junkyard.

I don't know the exact reason about Junkyard, or Pig Pen east of Fostoria. There is also Seven Hills east of Greenwich. The origination of these names I'm sure is interesting, but I do not know the official reasons. There was also an obscure location on the EL east of Cleveland near Garrettsville, just at the Rt. 700? crossing out in the middle of nowhere, showed up on EL timetables as Jeddoe. Even EL employees didn't know the origination.

There was also Ohio City, where the EL track 1 and Cloverleaf diamond, just the diamond, sat in the field for years and years without any other rail in sight anywhere.

There's a pig farm there. And it really smells in the summer.

Smells like $$$$$$$$$$$$ to me.

Different side of Deshler 64.5 signal was called The fat girls dance club signal.

Didn't the ROW near Heck Hill Road near Urbana have uneven grade separation...like sort of what you see on the CSX Garrett Sub between Hicksville and St Joe Indiana or the abandoned EL section from Servia Indiana to Rochester Indiana.

Yes Lukas, you're exactly right, it did. This was the portion between WEST RICE and GARRET which had a long siding.

Yes..Slaughterhouse Road was a signal at very north end of the wye to the Scioto Side near the south end of the Bellevue City Limits. There used to be a Slaughterhouse that was adjacent to the tracks by New Haven Connection. But crews always have and will change at the Seneca-Sandusky County Line Road 113 often referred to as "Kenny Road" by crews and dispatchers. At this point, between Bellevue and Flat Rock was a long siding where train meets were staged or trains like 233/234 and grain and coal trains waiting to come and go off the Fostoria side waited to swap out. After the buyout the siding became part of a double main from Hew Haven Connection all the way to Chatfield about 26 miles down the line. Also with this change crossovers were installed at the former Flat Rock siding at Shrivers near Flat Rock and "Flat Rock" the new control point at New Haven Connection. The sidings at Franks and Carrothers also became part of the double main

Thanks for the information..I have wondered how much was changed with the double tracking.

My scanner was ripped off and I never replaced it.

Maybe some day I'll buy a replacement. :|
