Todd,

You're got a few that are off...

•Q231
•Q243

Both are WESTBOUND on the Chicago side that turn SOUTH at Deshler, however, depending on the traffic/crews, both trains COULD run straight south on the Toledo Division. (SE Connection)

•Q507 Manifest - Always runs straight south...rarely does it come off the connection from the east, likewise, its counterpart Q506 is a straight northbound.

•Q501 Manifest- is eastbound and turns south at Deshler, its counterpart, Q500 is a northbound that turns west. (SW Connection)

•K185- loaded iron ore (aka taconite) runs straight south. Its counter part, K186, goes straight north.

•D743 Local is based out of Lima, Ohio. It will run to Deshler to run around or travel on north and return south a few hours later. It keeps the same symbol

•G009 is an as needed grain train to Tontogany.

•K524 is a west to southbound coil train that usually has NS power, its counter part is K525, empties is northbound that turns east. (SE Connection)

I am not familiar with this symbol on the Toledo Subdivision Side: K209

You may also add a Q222 on the Toledo Sub side, this is a new train that runs north and turns east to North Baltimore (SE Connection) with auto racks.

A few things:

Its important to realize that, because of the nature of CSX, anything goes. While most of the time the above routes are observed, because CSX has routing options, anything can happen.

I am not sure if you are familiar with ATCS, but if you are not, this would be a good program to have on your laptop (assuming you will have one with you). Crossroads Park is WiFi equipped, ATCS is a free program that allows you to "see" what the dispatcher is routing. I've attached a screen shot from the aggregated server that covers most of the Toledo Division. If you have questions, please feel free to ask. Several of us on here have played around with this and can get you set up with the needed files.

The red lines indicate a train, the green indicate a routing. As you can see at this moment, not much is running in Deshler!

I know several of you feel I need to “just go to Deshler” but I still have at least 2.5 months before that trip is even possible. In the mean time, I wanted to get familiar with some symbols, so when I get there and hear a train mentioned on the scanner, I know which direction, or more importantly, which connector the thing is going to take, thus allowing time to maneuver for a decent shot.

The commodities and unit trains were omitted due to their as-needed status. But please feel free to add the some symbols of known oil, ethanol, grain, coke, etc trains that utilize the connector tracks.

As there is scant searchable and comprehensive information on the net, I hope this list will help other/future railfans interested in the area.

Additions and corrections are encouraged.

Thanks!

Thank you very much CG Tower. Great train routing info! I was not aware they could choose a route (but I suppose it makes sense for some trains).

I knew about the ATCS but I haven’t the first clue where to find the program or how to install it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Which would be easier for installation and running the program, an HP or a Dell laptop? Both are about five years old.

Wow! Thanks for tweeking the list and supplying the pdf. I really appreciate it!

Can’t wait for some warm weather to roll in so I can come down and catch a couple days of action.

Q158 now originates at North Baltimore and terminates in New York.
Q148 Chicago to Cleveland
Q172 BNSF Chicago to North Baltimore also operates with a S (meaning second) section a few times a week.
Q206 is back almost daily Chicago to Walbridge via Fostoria
Q209 Toledo to Chicago every other day via Deshler northwest transfer.
Q248 Evansville to Chicago via Deshler southwest transfer
Q339 has been abolished and runs as S365 if needed.
Q383 Willard to BNSF Chicago

Both should be fine to run ATCS. It's not a terribly powerful program that older Windows computers should run fine.

I remember one of the park regulars running it on a Pentium 2 system, which was already old 10 years ago. I ran ATCS on a Pentium 4 with Windows XP at home without any problems.

Good to know that running the ATCS shouldn't be a prolem. Thanks again for all the outstanding information and assistance! There are some real class acts on these boards and I hope to have the opportunity to thank you in person someday.

PERFECT!! Looks like you had an outstandingly productive time and a wide variety of locomotives and railroads to boot. Coming down from mid-Michigan, that is exactly what I plan to do and I hope to get my first trip in within the next couple of weeks. Just waiting for calendar, work schedule, and of course weather, to align. Again, AWESOME POST!! Thanks for sharing your trip in such meticulous detail.
