Example Routing of Traffic - 15 Sand cars for Muskegon from NS in Toledo.

Cars dropped at Ottawa Yard by NS at 08:00
TOL-2 Puts cars on Train TD 2. TD departs Toledo at 12:00 on Day 2. Cars arrive in Durand at 23:00 Day 2.
DUR-1 Switches cars and puts them on DGR.
Day 4 DGR leaves at 02:00 and arrives with cars in Grand Rapids on Day 4 07:00
Day 4 GR-2 switches cars which are picked up by Day 5 MSK-3.
Day 5 MSK-3 brings cars to Muskegon where Day 5 MSK-1 Delivers cars to customer for loading.
Cars are picked up at customer by Day 7 MSK-1.
Day 7 MSK-1 hands cars to Day 7 MSK-3, which takes cars to Grand Rapids.
Day 7 MSK-1 drops cars in Grand Rapids for Processing by Day 8 GR-2.
Day 8 GR-2 blocks cars for outbound GRD Day 8.
Day 8 GRD brings cars to Durand where Day 8 DUR-1 puts cars on Day 9 DT.
Day 9 DT takes cars to Toledo where TOL-1 puts cars onto NS Interchange train to be picked up by NS on Day 10.

The loaded cars head back eastbound faster than the westbound empties because the schedule is set up to match up trains going EB.

Example sand cars from NS in Toledo to Yuma Sand pit for loading.
Cars dropped at Ottawa Yard by NS at 08:00
TOL-2 Puts cars on Train TD 2. TD departs Toledo at 12:00 on Day 2. Cars arrive in Durand at 23:00 Day 2.
Day 3. DUR-1 Switches cars and puts them on OSTN (Day 4)
Day 4 OSTN takes cars to Owosso and blocks them for Day 5 ONTN.
Day 5 ONTN takes cars to Day 5 CSTN who takes them to Day 6 CNTN. CNTN delivers them to Yuma Sand Pit where they are loaded and released on on Day 7.
Day 7 CNTN takes cars to Day 8 CSTN, who delivers them to Day 8 ONTN. ONTN delivers them to Owosso for OSTN Day 9.
Day 9 OSTN delivers them to Day 9 DUR-1, which puts them in Day 10 DT.
Day 10 Day 10 delivers them to Toledo where Day 11 Tol -2 Will put them onto interchange train for NS Pickup on Day 12.

Due to length some cars on spending on the railroad, the GLOR is considering some additional through freights between locations on the Northern Division, but volume of traffic may dictate ability to complete this change.

2010 Update

In January of 2010, the Great Lakes and Ohio River Railroad sold the Central Railroad of Indianapolis Subdivision to the Toledo Peoria and Western Railroad.

In July 2010, the Great Lakes and Ohio River Railroad leased the NS Peavine Line between Clare Yard and Winchester, with the possibility of restarting grain traffic to the Winchester AG services. The majority of this line has been out of service for almost a decade, since NS railbanked the line from Portsmouth to Cincinnati. All traffic with be handed off to NS at Clare Yard. This line will be operated as the Peavine Subdivision. The track ownership will be maintained by NS. To handle service on this line, GLOR has purchased three SD9m locomotives which have been retired recently by Norfolk Southern. The three engines, 51, 55 and 56 are all former Nickle Plate Road locomotives and were rebuilt in 2003 by Norfolk Southern. They had been in yard use until approximately 2007 when they were taken out of service and stored. They will be refurbished by NRE in Silvas, Il before being transfered to the GLOR at Clare Yard.

Train Symbols for this new service will be

PV1 -Peavine Subdivision Local

On Duty: 07:30

Runs as needed on the Peavine Subdivision from Clare Yard and return.

In September 2010 another new line has been added to the railroad. The Great Lakes and Ohio River Railroad has added a segement of trackage running from Jackson to Lansing, Michigan leased from Norfolk Southern. In addition, the GLOR has agreed to a trackage rights agreement between Jackson and Ann Arbor. Current operations will now have the GLOR Lansing Subdivision operating between Lansing, Mi south to Jackson, Mi. GLOR will now pick up NS Toledo bound traffic in Jackson Yard and run this traffic from Jackson to Toledo, where it will be interchanged to NS. The GLOR has leased two additional locomotives, GMTX 2663 and GMTX 2675 for this service. When additional power is needed, it will be added from the GLOR power pool based in Ottawa Yard in Toledo.

The new train symbols for this operation will be

JAL - Jackson to Lansing

On Duty 05:00

Jackson to Lansing servicing customers along the route. Interchange with CSX and CN in Lansing.

LJA- Lansing to Jackson

On Duty: 17:00

Lansing to Jackson local service. Drops cars in Jackson to train JATO to take to Toledo.

JATO- Jackson to Toledo via Ann Arbor

On Duty: 03:00

Jackson to Toledo Haulage Train from NS Yard Jackson to NS Homestead Yard (Toledo)

TOJA - Toledo to Jackson via Ann Arbor

On Duty: 15:00

NS Homestead Yard (Toledo) to NS Jackson Yard Haulage Train.

In December 2010, the GLOR also picks up local switchin traffic in Toledo from Norfolk Southern. These trains are served by the existing Toledo Locals.

March 30th, 2011.

The first real negative situation has finally hit the GLOR. Following 5 years and two contracts with significant concessions from workers, Electrolux has decided to close its Greenville plant. The plant was the major source of traffic for the GLOR's Greenville Branch. The last day of production at the plant will be June 30th, 2011 with the last rail shipments expect to leave the plant around that time. The plant has been the source of roughly 10 cars per day of outbound refridgerators, as well as roughly 2 cars per week of inbound chemicals. The plant site has been put up for sale.

The current plan is that all remaining traffic on the Greenville Branch will now be handled by train GR1. It is also expected the GR-3 may be required to begin bringing GR-1's trains back to Grand Rapids on a more regular basis. Additional changes may be coming to the region as well, but nothing has been announced as of yet.

Additional news from the GLOR relates to locomotive numbering and paint schemes. For years the railroad has struggling to have a solidified corperate identity. Starting in 2012, the railroad will being repainting and renumbering their locomotive fleet. These actions will take place as the railroad is bringing locomotives into the shops for service. The currnt plant is for the Owosso shops to handle most of the repainting work, meaning some trains will be seeing locomotives not normally seen "round these parts." During this process the railroad will also be evaluating the status of the locomotive fleet as several locomotives in the fleet are beginning to show their extensive age. There are concerns regarding the type of locomotives that can be used on the Northern Division trackage. This may result in the reallocation of some locmotives which have been used almost excluively on the Southern Division being shipper north. Other locomotive may simply be retired and replaced with new locomotive power.

December 2012. A bidding war has developed for the railroad known to some as the "worst track in the world". The Maumee and Western Railroad was put up for sale and a bidding war between Pioneer Railcorp and the GLOR ensued. The GLOR won the bidding war, paying what some feel was an inflated price of 6.5 million dollars for the line, 1.1 million more than the Pioneer Railcorp bid. The GLOR will currently continue operations as they have been from Defiance, Oh, with plans to reestablish the line east of Napoleon to Liberty Center and build a pair of connection tracks to the DT&I subdivison. The line will be operated at the Defiance Subdivision of the Southern Division. Interchanges for the Defiance Subvision will be at Defiance with CSX and Woodburn, Indiana with NS. Locomotive power will be the form MAW GP10 #16 and the CF7 #5. This power will remain on the line for the short term as new power is being sought to operate the line. The GLOR has already been in contact with potential shippers to increase carloads on the line. The GLOR is also seeking financing to upgrade the terrible track conditions on the Defiance Subdivision.

December 2012 also witnessed another change in the railroad. The Michigan Department of Transportation has purchased the Michigan Line from Kalamazoo to Dearborn. Amtrak will take over the dispatching of the line. Norfolk Southern will be the exclusive provider of freight customer service over the line, however GLOR trains JATO and TOJA will continue to operate over the line. The purchase by Amtrak and the anticipated upgrading of the line between Jackson and Ann Arbor has resulted in the need for GLOR to make additional locomotive purchases. They have decided to purchase, a heafty expense, NS units 7149 and 7150. These locomotive are GP60's which are ITCS equiped. The additional power will meet the current demands of the railroad in terms of power, and meet the estimated future demand should ITCS be implemented along the entire Amtrak Michigan Line, as is expected.

January 2013. The GLOR has decided they need additional space for trains into and out of Toledo due to increased traffic levels and the success of the automotive business. As a result, they purchase from CSX, an approximately 120 acre property north of Toledo in Erie Township, Michigan. The current plan is for the GLOR to build a new railroad yard, called Erie Yard, on the site of the former PM and C&O Ottawa Yard, which was closed in the 1960's. CSX had retained ownership of the property since the yards closure.

To facilite the creation of this yard, the GLOR has also purchased 63 acre proeprty south of Telegraph Rd between the current GLOR mainline and the CSX mainline. A connection track with be installed on this property and GLOR will install and maintain crossovers on CSX south of Sterns Rd, to allow access into the yard property from the connection track and South of Detroit Ave to allow access to the CSX mainline from Ottawa Yard. CSX will allow GLOR trackage rights from the the Detroit Ave crossover track to just north of Sterns Rd to access the yard. The GLOR yard will consist of 8 yard tracks to be used for classification purposes and 4 tracks capable of holding 120 car unit trains, with a connection on the north end to the CSX mainline.

This yard will eliminate the difficuly of routing trains into and out of Ottawa Yard and free yard space for the growing local industry traffic.

Interchange trains from the WLE and CN in Toledo will continue to bring cars to Ottawa Yard, while NS and CSX trains will operate directly to the Erie Yard as needed via trackage rights.

In other news, the locomotive renumbering and repainting program is going well. A new roster and paint scheme for the railroad should be released shortly.

Additionally, the GLOR has now won the contract to provide western coal to Consumers Energy in addition to the eastern coal it had been providing. The eastern coal trains are going to be phased out, as the plant is looking to burn exclusively cleaner burning wester coal in the near future. Routing for these coal trains will be BNSF to Chicago. In Chicago the GLOR will bring these trains over the Western Division to Lima where they will run north of the DT&I subdivision to Diann, followed by a trip north on the Northern Division to Durand and finally a trip up the Bay City Subdivision to Exxesville. This trip is a much longer than CN's routing to Durand then up the Bay City Subdivision. The reasoning for the change in routing was not published, by many believe CN was pushing for too much money in the routing. CSX/LSRC also bid for the contract, but also wanted more than Consumers was willing to pay. Time will tell if this contract will be worth if for the GLOR.

Thanks, with the rise of every empire, comes the eventual fall, correct? It might even start interchanging with one or more of your railroads soon :D

One of the more forgotten aspects of the GLOR's operations are the interactions with a few short line operators they connect with. These operators have taken over some of the most forgottena and often neglected trackage in the State of Michigan.

Two operators that the GLOR has partnered with are the Charlevoix, Petoskey & Pellston (CP&P), and the Mid Michigan (MMGN). The GLOR had attempted to purchase both lines previously but in both instances circumstances dictated that the sales not be concluded. As the result, another operator, the AARR enterprises began to operate and continues to operate the lines. These lines connect with the GLOR's Northern Division.

Additionally, the GLOR also connects with another AARR enterprises line, the Alma and Mid Michigan Railroad. These railroads and interchange partners have created a substantial amount of additional business for the GLOR in terms of both on-line customer bridge traffic and in terms of locomotive maintainance and overhaul conducted at the Owosso shops.

2014 witnessed strange changes that occured for the GLOR. Two new customers have decided to locate business in areas near, but not on the GLOR's trackage. As a result, the GLOR has partnered with local officials to reinstall a long removed portion of the former Michigan Air Line from Lakeland east to Whimore Lake and from Lakeland west to Pinckney. The Pinckney customer is a gravel pit which will also be installing a concrete crusher to process construction waste. The Whitmore Lake customer will be a metal recycling processor located in the Zander Industrial Plaza where Barnstormers was formally located.

The line will be reinstalled west, along the former ROW now the Lakeland State Trail (aka the Mike Lavine State Park). The line will extend from its connection with the GLOR at Lakeland, west through Pinckney to an endpoint just east of the M-36 Brambler Ln intersection, west of Pinckney. A spur line will be extended from this line north to the Fyke Sand and Gravel Property, leaving the mainline at approximately Pond St in a northerly direction. It is anticipated that Fyke Sand and Gravel will produce about 10 outbound cars per week of gravel, as well as 3-4 carloads per week of crushed concrete. Concrete consstruction debris will also be brought inbound to the property in high side gondolas. If the line is reinstalled, there is also the possibility a new customer may be interested in purchasing the long dormant lumber yard in Pinckney as a lumber transload site.

The line east to Whitmore Lake was planned to extend from the current GLOR line in Whitmore Lake, north into the industrial plaza, however an agreement could not be reached with the Michigan Department of Corrections which owns the parcel to the south of M-36. The MDOC had security concerns regarding the access to the parcel. Thankfully the MDNR was more willing to work out a deal. The GLOR will share the ROW with trail between Lakeland and Whitmore Lake. This will still cross the MDOC property as well, but in a much more secure and accessible manner. The line will extend west of Whitmore Lake Rd, with a spur going into the industrial plaza across M-36. The metal recycler has agreed to a minimum of 5 carloads per week for the first year and 10 carloads per week for the next three years. These will be brought into the facility in both low and high sided gondolas.

There is also talk of possibly adding a customer to the south off Whitmore Lake Rd, but nothing concrete has been agreed to as of this time.

Additionally in late 2014, business began booming in Lenawee County. An industrial bakery purchased property in Tecumseh with the intent of creating a new bakery producing baked and sweet products starting in late 2016. The business looked at transloading flour, sugar and sweeteners at a transload loaction, but also inquired about direct rail service. At the same time, Next Resins in Clinton was also looking at possibly getting rail service. Next Resins interestingly enough still has a rail spur off the SMRS. when Next Resins brought up the idea, three other potential customers have brought up the possibility of wanting rail service in Clinton, with two seeming more likely than the third. Michigan Pallet and Tri County Hardwoods both are in serious talks about contrinuting to a rebuild of the line, while DST was involved early, but has not been involved in cost sharing discussions. GLOR is interested in pursuing this traffic, however, two concerns remain. The cost of rebuilding the line from Raisin Center to Clinton, which would be done in conjunction with the lines owners, the SMRS, which has no desire to be involved in freight operations, but which would like to remain involved in the tourist operations they currently run. The second, and potentially bigger issue is access to the line. Currently from Raisin Center north is landlocked as the diamond at Raisin Center was removed when Conrail gave up operations to Clinton. Two possibilities exist for accessing the line, a switch from the NS mainline at Raisin Center, or reinstalling the diamond at Raisin Center and upgrade the trackage from Lenawee Jct north to Raisin Center.

In early 2015, another potential customer has pushed for the reinstallation of traffic north of Raisin Center. Wacker Chemical, located just off the trackage north of the River Raisin has inquired about joining the group working for reinstallation of the line. It appears as if the project will more forward as substantial grant money has been secured for reahabilitation of the trackage from Raisin Center to Clinton. The biggest concern currently is NS dragging their feet on either allowing reinstallation of the diamond or a connector track and and trackage rights from Adrian to Raisin Center over NS. Currently there is the potential for legal action related to the line from Lenawee Junction to Clinton and its abandonment and purchase.

Otherwise the only issues facing the railroad are the regular ebbs and flows of rail traffic. Other potential increases in traffic are also in the development stage, but concerns are growing about the loss of substantial traffic in the future as well.

Re: Great Lakes and Ohio River Railroad

Unread post by chapmaja »

Late 2015 Update: Some good and some bad for the GLOR. The last large shipper in Ionia has ceased shipping by rail. As a result of the decreased traffic load, trains DGR and GRD have seen a frequency decrease. DGR is now running M-W-F and GRD runs T-Th-Sa. DGR and GRD are also currenrtly working the customers between Owosso and Malta, while GR-1 is currently working the traffic in Lowell and Ada, the only remaining customers outside of Grand Rapids.

The good news for the railroad is the funding has come through for the refurbishing of the line from Clinton to Raisin Center. NS has agree to install a connector between the Wabash Line to Adrian and grant GLOR trackage rights over the line from Adrian to Raisin Center. The line south of Raisin Center to Lenawee Junction is going to remain under the ownership of the SMRS, while the SMRS is selling the line from Clinton to Raisin Center to the GLOR, while retaining the right to operate schedule tourist trains from Clinton the Raisin Center over the line. Improvements on the line, combined with work by volunteers may also result in AA RS1 #20 being moved from its current resting place south of Raisin Center to Clinton to being pulling the tourist trains.

Customers for the line from Clinton to Tecumseh upon reactivation of freight traffic will be Wacker Chemical, Tecumseh Baking Products, Next Resins, Michigan Pallet and Tri County Hardwoods. The line will be serviced by train ADR-1, however it is possible that a Clinton local may be started running from Clinton to Adrian if traffic levels improve to the point one is needed. Service on freight reactivation day is expected to be 3 days per week, however this will be dictated by the traffic levels on the line.

Additional good news is that traffic levels are holding steady with the exception of the line from Durand to Grand Rapids.

Almost all of the locomotives on the line have been repainted and renumbered. The new locomotive roster for the railroad will be released upon completion of all repainting and renumbering.

March 1st, 2016 Update:

The connector between the GLOR's Clinton Branch and NS has been installed. The line has been rehabiliated enough to allow small blocks of cars to run over the line (5 cars maximum at this time), from Chase Rd north to Tecumseh and Clinton. The GLOR's ADR-1 local will bring the full train Adrian to just south of Chase Rd, then break the train into 5 car or less cuts and take those to Tecumseh. All service on the line is being handled out of the yard in Tecumseh. Track speed is 10 mph on the branch currently, so ADR-1 is taking all day and sometimes multiple days to complete the entire run from Adrian to Clinton and return. Work is contracted to improve the line, but the progress is slow on the line. Switches were installed and sidings built for Tri-County, Michigan Pallet, and Tecumseh Baking Products, while the Next Resin and Wacker Chemical spurs was refurbished / extended. The line is currently limited to 263,000 pound cars, although the work will bring the line up to 286,000 pound capacity when it is completed.

The first train consisted of 3 tankers for Wacker, 7 loads of flour and 1 tanker of high fructose corn syrup for Tecumseh Baking, 3 centerbeam flats for Michigan Pallet, 2 tankers for Next Resins, and 1 Log Load for Tri County.

The reinstallation of the line from Pinckney to Whitmore Lake is nearly complete, with customer shipments expected to begin in June or July to the gravel pit in Pinckney and by September to the Zander Industrial Plaza. There is also the possibility of a new customer purchasing the former Hoover Universal site in Whitmore Lake, although concerns about contamination are currently a blockade to the property's sale.

Elsewhere, the new numbering and painting of locomotives is almost complete. The paint scheme is a simply, Nickel Plate inspired, light blue and dark blue scheme. The exception to this is locomotives which are wearing heritage schemes / numbers to either the locomotives previous owner, or the previous operator of the tracks. Several of these schemes were developed and licensed with existing rights holders.

There is a renewed interest in pursuing the Potash loads found in northern central Michigan. The GLOR is in discussions to possibly reinstall a portion of the line outside of Clare for this service, although it is also possible that a transload site would be established. Several customers on the line north of Clare are pushing for reinstallation of the Clare to Baldwin line, to expediate service to and from customers in the northern portion of the state. Among these companies is Yoplait, whose plant in Reed City would like to bring in fruit via railcars from across the county, instead of having to have product trucked in. One of the interesting products they would like to bring in via rail is cherries from growers in the Traverse City area. Rebuilding those line would allow the railroad to short haul cherries from TC to Reed City, but it would have to go via Clare, as there are no current plants to reinstall Cadillac to Reed City. Reinstallation from Clare to Baldwin would allow the potash loads to go both east and west from Michigan, depending on the routing from the plant, either via Baldwin to CSX in Grand Rapids, or via Clare to CN, NS or WLE via Durand and Toledo.

There is also additional news about two additional potential projects located along the GLOR's Northern Division and Saginaw Bay Divisions. First, in Ithaca, ZFS has proposed building a grain elevator and soybean processing plant where the failed ethanol plant was going to be built. If this project goes through, it will be a major customer of GLOR rail service and may significantly change operations of the Northern Division. On the Saginaw Bay Division, there is a proposal to put in a new renewable energy development just outside Durand. Some reports indicate this may be some sort of steel mill, although details are sketchy to say the least. Hopefully more details will be coming, but it appears the project planners have purchased or have options to purchase roughly 500 acres from the City of Durand for the project.

Finally, another proposal has been made to locate a waste to energy plant in the Thompsonville Area. This proposal, unlike previous proposals will include a complete recycling complex as well as waste to energy generation plant. The currently untilized section of track between Yuma and Thompsonville, purchased in 2002, would be located alongside the plant and would be used to bring in trash and haul out recyclable plastic and metal. Like several other projects, considerable investment would be required in the infrastructure to make the project ecomomically viable for the railroad.

The bad news for the GLOR is they will lose a sizable chunk of unit train traffic, as the JC Weadock Powerplant ceased operations late in 2015 and will be shuttered completely in 2016. The GLOR was providing coal for this plant. Coal is still being supplied to the Karn via their interchange with BNSF in Chicago. There are growing concerns how long this traffic will last, although the traffic, despite a significant volume, does not generate a significant revenue for the railroad.

That is an impressive roster. I may have missed it but where is the main engine repair/service facility?
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...

January 1st, 2017 Update:

Improvements continue on the Clinton - Raisin Center Branch. The GLOR has decided to change the operations slightly on the line, staging locomotives #1 and and #2 at the yard in Clinton. ADR-1 will now bring the train from Adrian to Tecumseh, using the normal Adrian Subdivision Power. They cut off the power from Adrian, normally a pair of GP9s, and pick up the 2 SW1200's from the Tecumseh Yard. The train is symboled ADR-3 while on the Clinton Branch. Often an X-ADR-X will need to be called to return the train to Adrian.

The former Michigan Airline reinstallation is now complete, and in service. A new symbol has been created, PIN-1 to operate the Pinckney to Whitmore Lake segment. Power is stored in Pinckney, and will pick up the cars dropped by AA-1. They will then normally run back west to Pinckney, servicing Fyke, before returning east to service Whitmore Lake. Service is generally two GP7 or GP9 locomotives running in a push pull allignment.

Discussions have continued regarding the reinstallation of the line from Clare to Bladwin, with it looking increasingly likely this line will be reinstalled with the trail next to the line. Given the estimated timing of 5-7 additional years for the Potash line to be reinstalled, this project is not a high priority project. GLOR will be picking up a new transload customer in Clare, Yoplait. Yoplait is going to be creating a new product that will be sold in glass containers. The glass for this product will be shipped into Clare and transloaded onto trucks for delivery to the factory. Currently all outbound product is still slated to be sent outbound via truck.

Additional good news is two new (1 new and 1 returning after a long absence customers) may be coming to Greenville. The former Electrolux plant may be brought back into service producing refridgerators again. Additionally, there has been some talk about the former Federal Mogul property being brought back into rail service. A lot of behind the scenes things are happening with Federal Mogul, so time will tell if they will ever resume service. Additionally, there is some possibility that a new business in Belding may want rail service as well.

The railroad is also looking at purchasing a well known property in Lima, Oh to service a major locomotive maintainance facility to replace the existing smaller facilities in Owosso and Cincinnati, Oh. This property is the former Lima Locomotive Works. Plans are to construct a locomotive maintainance and storage facility on a portion of the property and a museum detailing the railroad history of the area on the remainder of the property. The property is not located in a currently GLOR line, so if the project moves forward, trackage rights would need to be secured between the GLOR and NS to access the property.

The current locomotive maintainance facilities served their purposes well, but given the expansion of the GLOR over the years and the wide variety of power employed on the railroad, the need for a centralized locomotive maintainance facility is apparent.

GLOR has also decided to enter the leasing business and several locomotives may be getting leased to businesses / other railroads on a short and long term basis in the near future.

Cars from Muksegon Secondary for western interchange partners are currently routed via either CSX (Grand Rapids) to Chicago or NS (via Grand Elk).

In Fremont, Gerber finally began getting some product inbound in refers from the west coast and south. Normally busier in winter and spring as the plant tries sourcing locally for summer and fall.

February 1st, 2018 News Break:

The northern end of the railroad will be adding a couple new customers,

Hopefully by January 1st, 2019. East Jordan Iron Works has decided to connect their Elmire Plant to the GLC rail network. The ROW will cross US131 at Deadmans Hill Rd and follow 131 NB to the plant property. It is unknown at this time how many railcars per year will be produced, byt the agreement calls for a minimum of 500 railcars per year to be transported either into or out of the facility, or payment for said amount of cars. Construction of the
ROW will begin when weather allows such work to begin.

Additionally, final permits have been approved for the construction of the Thompsonville Area Waste Recycling and Energy Plant (TAWRE) Construction is estimated to take two years and infrastructure improvements to the rail line will be conducted while construction is ongoing. The project planners have agreed to a minimum 1,000 car load per year total or payment in lieu. The plant will receive inbound trash and will send out metal and plastic scrap to be processed. Organic material will be burned in an energy production facility.

The GLOR will be changing operations in Northern Michigan slightly. GLOR is now originating a local TC-1 out of Boardman Yard in TC. The local crew will be called from Cadillac and drive to TC, work the industries in TC, run south to Walton Jct, exchange cars with CNTN, and return to TC. It is estimated that this local will be operated 2 days per week. This is in part due to the increased operations needed on the line from EJIW siding construction and added traffic from the interchange with the CP&P in at Foreman (Petoskey). Track conditions on the lines also played a part, as track conditions are making it difficult to run all operations on the line. Power for the TC local is expected to be first generations GP's, either the GP7 or GP9 varieties. It is anticipated two units will used on the TC local, although it is possible the railroad will keep 3 units in TC so there is additional power as needed, or in case of a breakdown.
