The Windsor, Chelsea, and Eastern Railroad

Unread post by Derektrainman03 »

The Windsor, Chelsea and Eastern Railroad (Reporting marks WC&E) is a regional railroad that serves the towns of Windsor, VT, Chelsea, VT, and the western parts of New Hampshire. The railroad was created in 1947 to not only serve passenger trains but also local freight for the small towns. The locomotives that the WC&E had at the start of the life were 4 steam locomotives which were in the 2-6-0 configuration numbered 2100-2103. By 1959, the railroad started to go under dieselization and had 4 GP-7s to replace the 2-6-0s. The GP-7s were numbered 600-603. The railroad was not doing too good in the 1960s and by 1969, the railroad was in a stage of dormancy for a while. By 1972, a man by the name of Harold Goodman wanted to revive the railroad for freight work on the small railroad and was successful in 1976. By 1980 however, Harold Goodman died of a sudden heart attack and it also marked the end of the WC&E railroad. In 1982, the tracks from the western part of New Hampshire to Chelsea, VT were ripped up and as of 1992, talks of a Rail trail ensues. But the tracks from Chelsea, VT to Windsor, VT in 1992 were considered owned by the state of Vermont in out of service condition. The railroad did interchange with the MOXX Railroad and the Crescent Valley Railroad. By 2001, the section from Chelsea, VT to Windsor, VT were finally ripped up and now a Rail Trail and the grade of the railroad can still be seen in some parts of the line. The fate of the GP-7s the railroad had for so many years had been sadly sold to scarp in 1983. A rather sad end for this independent regional railroad.
