Ohio Northern Railroad (OHNR)

Unread post by Y@ »

When the Grand Trunk Western (owned by Canadian National) put the former DT&I mainline from Diann, Michigan to Springfield, Ohio up for sale in 1996, the Ohio Valley Transportation Services company came up with the winning bid and began operating the line as the Ohio Northern RR in 1997. Trackage rights were immediately established with CN from Diann (southeast of Dundee) to Flat Rock Yard outside Detroit, as well as with Conrail and CSX Transportation to access Cincinnati via Conrail's line between Springfield and the Cincinnati suburb of Bond Hill where rights began over CSX to Queensgate Yard.

From Diann, the former DT&I runs south via Metamora, Delta, Malinta and Hamler to XN Junction on the south side of Leipsic. From there, the OHNR has trackage rights over the CSX Toledo Subdivision for roughly 20 miles to DT&I Junction on the north side of Lima where the DT&I splits off. South of DT&I Junction is Ford Park Yard where the OHNR bases their operations. Continuing down the mainline, the OHNR crosses and connects with Norfolk Southern at "Morris" and then the Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern Railroad at "Sugar Street." Exiting Lima, the line continues through Uniopolis, St. Johns, Jackson Center, Maplewood, Quincy, Rosewood, St. Paris, Thackery and Tremont City to Maitland Junction on the north side of Springfield. At Maitland, the OHNR meets the Indiana & Ohio Central (IOCR) system. The OHNR has trackage rights through Springfield to the IOCR yard on the southeast side of town where the two railroads interchange. The OHNR also has rights between Maitland and Cold Springs west of town to reach the connection with Norfolk Southern to Cincinnati. In all, the OHNR owns and operates roughly 140 miles of track, and has roughly 100 miles of trackage rights between CN, CSXT, IOCR, and NS.

When the OHNR began operations in February 1997, it became the second railroad to operate under ownership of the OVTS Company. With nowhere to transfer power from, the OHNR turned to CSX and North American Locomotive Services Inc. (NALX) to provide power until they could get their own fleet together. From February to November, the OHNR leased three C30-7's, four SD40-2's, and seven GP40's from CSX, along with four SD45's and ten GP39-2's from NALX. Through the fall of 1997, engines began to show up on the OHNR dressed in a simple but classy paint scheme, similar to the New York Central's "cigar band" scheme. Engines were painted black with white striping and light gray trim. The 14 engines leased from CSX were all returned by the end of November, and the OHNR had an agreement with NALX to purchase the ten GP39-2's along with other engines already purchased from them. By the end of 1998, the OHNR rostered a fleet of four and six axle EMD's that were all dressed in company paint.

Traffic has always been steady across the OHNR. One of the important pieces of the system is the automotive traffic moving between Detroit and Cincinnati. Included in that traffic are finished autos moving south from Detroit, auto parts moving north from Cincinnati to Toledo (via the Ann Arbor RR) and Detroit, and engine blocks shipping north and south from the Ford Engine Plant in Lima. Grain and agricultural products also represent a good portion of traffic on the OHNR, including two elevators that load unit grain trains: The Andersons at Metamora, and Sunrise Cooperative at Uniopolis. Various other industries receive rail service across the system, and below is a list of customers and interchanges from north to south on the system. Here are more details on each of the regular jobs and their duties.

LSW-1
The daytime Lima Switcher comes on at 0600 every weekday to switch the yard, build the outbound LSL, spot and pull cars from Ford, and go to the Ottawa Loop when needed. Typically the LSW-1 will go to Ottawa in the early afternoons on Mondays and Thursdays. More often than not, an extra switcher crew will work on Saturdays. When on CSX, the train carries a symbol of Z865.

LSW-2
The nighttime Lima Switcher comes on at 1800 Sunday through Thursday to switch the yard, build the outbound LNL, spot and pull cars from Ford, and service the Lima and Jackson Center customers. On Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights, the LSW-2 runs south to Jackson Center to switch Plastipak, working other customers when needed.

LNL
The Lima North Local comes on at 2300 Sunday through Thursday to make a Delta turn and work Leipsic customers when needed. The train runs with pig iron, scrap metal, and mixed freight for forwarding to Flat Rock. Train length can vary, but is typically between 30 and 60 cars. When on CSX, the train carries a symbol of Z867 or Z869.

LSL
The Lima South Local comes on at 0700 every weekday to make a Springfield turn. This job will also pick up empties from Bambauer at Jackson Center when needed as all empties are forwarded to the IOCR. The train runs with mixed freight. Train length can vary, but is typically between 30 and 60 cars.

DSW-1
The daytime Delta switcher comes on at 0600 every weekday to switch cars on the hill, service Metamora and Malinta customers when needed, and make a Flat Rock turn on Tuesdays and Fridays. The job will also switch Fulton County and Northstar as needed, but the DSW-2 typically handles those duties.

DSW-2
The nighttime Delta switcher comes on at 1800 Sunday through Thursday to service the Delta customers, switch inbound cars from Flat Rock and build the outbound cut for the LNL. The job will also switch Leipsic customers if needed, but the LNL typically handles those duties.

100
The 100 train runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with automotive traffic from Detroit for Lima and Cincinnati. The train sets off and picks up cars in Lima, which is normally Ford traffic and empty pig iron cars from Delta but random other cars will be thrown in sometimes. After changing crews in Lima, the train continues south to Springfield where it turns west at Maitland and gets on NS at Cold Springs for the run to Cincinnati. At Bond Hill, the train gets on CSX and continues to Queensgate where it terminates. The inbound crew will turn back on 101 the next day.

101
The 101 train runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with automotive traffic from Cincinnati for Lima and Detroit. The train sets off and picks up cars in Lima, which is normally Ford traffic and pig iron loads for Delta but random other cars will be thrown in sometimes. After changing crews in Lima, the train continues north to CN's Flat Rock yard where it terminates. The inbound crew will turn back on 100 the next day.

Extra Traffic
Metamora and Uniopolis each get 1-2 unit trains a month. The Metamora trains are 90 car sets that CSX drops off at Cairo for an OHNR crew to recrew and take north. The trains run with CSX power and are typically loaded within two days of spotting. The Uniopolis trains are 65 car sets that CSX drops off at Hamler for interchange. An extra OHNR crew will pick the train up using OHNR power and take it to Uniopolis for loading, which is typically done within three days of spotting.

Pig iron traffic can run heavy between Cincinnati and Delta. Most of the pig iron moves on the 100/101 trains, but a few times a month an extra "unit train" will run north from Cincy. Sometimes the train will run over the IOCR from Cincy to Springfield, but usually will run via NS to Springfield. Once the train gets to Delta, the crew will turn back with empties to Lima. Depending on crew availability, the empties will continue on an extra train, on the LSL to the IOCR, or on the 100 train to Cincy.

The detail and prototypical accuracy in your paper railroads reminds me of someone back in the 1990's, who for a college project, created a paper short line railroad in the NE states and over the years created a realistic regional railroad that stretched to Chicago (IIRC). He posted it in online until he finished college then took it down. In addition to everything you have he also had locomotive rebuilding (an environmentally friendly GP40 rebuild was his signature engine), railcar leasing, haulage rights, trackage rights, etc. He named his railroad after his last name, which began with a D, but I can't recall what it is  .

Funny Thing, I have a paper railroad by the same title operating in the Toledo and Maumee area.
