Enjoyable morning stroll... caught Amtrak down near Perkins in Jenison..waited for them to clear Q326 at Hudsonville, and watched Q326 near the construction site in Jenison. Lots of chatting with Gregg, Trussell, JT(chasing to St Joe) and Conrail Jon.

Looks like you missed an X500 on that update. :P If they haven't died yet, they should be close to Holland by now.

Hmmm...I'm good. :) I wonder if 500 disrupted the parade.

naaaa.....it only messed up traffic for people going to the parade, but coming through Holland at 12:45-ish wasn't too bad of a problem....I think the coal train last Thursday messed up parade traffic worse because it was longer and slower.....

Yea I railfanded today, I walked my train to find a stuck piston and a hand break, and as we were getting run around by K388, I found a car with the wheels sliding, that if it was not set out, would have had coke cars all over the ground, some where down by Monroe.

Not to mention the parade of about 50 buses that came into town at the exact moment the coal train arrived. WHAT A MESS! I think that's the biggest CF I've ever seen in Holland...and I was right in the center of it all.
Oh, look...the sign for Tim's favorite bank.

Speaking of coal trains...N914-03 just arrived in Wyoming yard at approx 4:35. Lead was CSXT 598 and trailing unit CSXT 455. They pulled down to the west end and the crew was off and picked up immediately. I'm now listening to the online scanner for them to get going again. Hopefully they leave when it's still light out.

Wow, must be a major flat spot on those wheels, eh?

Was not the flat spots, but the tread build up, we checked it out on the way by and to see if we could lend a hand, when we seen it, it was about a inch or so thick, and the conductor said that he had already pealed off about half of it. He said he was riding the side of the car, watching it to pull it down to set it off, and he had to get off and ride the car behind it, because it was jumping up and down so bad, that he almost fell off.

Ahh, I was picturing an axle locked up and the wheels sliding along the rails.

Yes JT that is what happens, but when that happens, the rail and wheel head heat up to the point that it "melts" the head of the rail, from the scrapeing, and forms buildup. This build up "welds" itself to the wheel, and just keeps growing and growing until, somthing breaks, or if the wheel starts turning again, the car jumps up and down, and "jumps" off the rail. It was so bad, it deffinatly would have in the curve in Monroe, under US-24

Wow, I never would have imagined that, Matt. Now THAT is something I'd like to see (as long as it didn't cause any derailment problems).

Not a bad way to spend Train Day. Got MMRR 24 sitting outside at Ann St., chased P371 down from Fuller and then to Holland. Got 326 in the yard along with that B36-7. Went out again after work and got Q335 at Snow Rd, N914 just east of Fox and X500 crossing the Thornapple Bridge.

And lets not forget it was on this day in 1869 that the golden spike was driven in meeting the Union and Central Pacific 8)
