Amtrak 353's rear unit, Amtrak 30, just went on the ground at CP-Scotten on CRSA trackage in Detroit. Train has been annulled and buses ordered for the passengers.

CP-Scotten is a tough place to see any of the derailment without seriously trespassing.

Lead engine was the 90225 today when saw them in Royal Oak.

Will they put 353's trainset on to 355?

Ahhh, he's far enough back. He got a friendly "toot toot" from the engineer. If the crew thought he was too close, they would've laid on the horn. The FRA makes rules for the railroads to follow, not railfans.

Really. The gates at a crossing are MUCH closer than 25 feet. Just sayin'.

Owl, you are going on the assumption that the right-of-way is 50 ft. wide--which some are and some are not; myself, I would rather not see anybody on the r-o-w--'cause there are people who just aren't smart enough to get out of the way of that big thingee coming down the tracks. Everyday I go by people who are doing something on the r-o-w and either don't realize how close I am to them before they know I am there--or they don't care and are proving how macho they are when I go by them, and these are the people who one day are going to get a surprise when I go by them....

I can remember people getting on JT on some earlier posts regarding shootin' photos' the 1225 and how close either he was or somebody else was and now you have someone saying the opposite of what the posters were getting on him about; it's no wonder that people can get a little grumpy with the inconsistant posts about said subject...

I got to see the video from the rear unit from the derailment--although there really wasn't much to see, just a little lurch from one side to another and then it came to a stop along with the sound of it with the wheels screeching going around the curve and then with them running on the web of the rail and then on the ties. I imagine the old wye will be out of service until the Conrail m-w guys get out there and change the rail; my roadforeman told me later that when he was down there and a FRA guy measured the rail, the one side of the curve had an inch and a 8th of the railhead wore off. Conrail had just dropped some new rail to put on the curve there, they were just a little too late with that project.

I was told the FRA rule is 6 feet away from the closest rail. Yes crossing flashers are closer.

6 ft away - That's platforms.
Crossing flashers are closer - That's in big public cities
