L301-19 @ 17:36 eastward reported by the Defect Detector mp CG44.2 Pearl, Mi with 36 axles. CSX engines #8066 + #8095 & 6 cars. He’ll be going into Holland mp CG25.3 for some work there & then head eastward.

By those odd axel counts at Green Oak the last few days, the DD must be counting the EOT as one axel. The train with 80 cars should have had a count of 332 axels. Train now approaching Fowlerville at 17:52. L303 earlier had only one car east of Lansing.

L301-19 @ 18:03 eastward Holland, Mi Depot mp CG25.3 on the Main Track & diverging onto the Pass Track with CSX engines #8066 + #8095 & 6 cars. When his work is done there he’ll head east.

It's not possible for the EOT to be counted as an axle by the HBD (Hot Bearing Detector) since the EOTs are located too high & centered to be detected by the pair of Magnetic Transducers the system uses for determining when to take infra-red samples from each passing wheel bearing & also counts the axles. The magnets are encased in fiber-glass and clamped to the inside of the rail gage just under the rail head near one of the infra-red scanners that are clamped on the outside side of the rail. As the wheel flanges pass over the magnets, roughly 1 inch above, a small electrical pulse about half a volt AC is produced by each passing flange. Extra axles can be caused by a glitch within the HBD's electronics, or, if a Transducer has become electrically "noisy" and a flat spot on a wheel making a heavy impact on the rail head can generate a "spike".

Distant Signals YouTube channel has a very good video showing a defect detector site. At the 3:41 time mark you'll see one of the silver infra-red scanners clamped to the outside of the rail (the other scanner is mounted on the opposite rail & out of view). Then inside of the track gauge you'll see the 2 smaller Magnetic Transducers clamped to the rail. At time mark 3:48 is a closeup view of the scanner & at 3:50 is a closeup view of the Magnetic Transducers (he made an error describing those as being used for detecting flat spots).

G80216 headed for Plymouth from Walbridge. Will turn the corner and go to Grand Ledge after GR crew gets to Plymouth around 1am.

Engines CSXT 3092 and 520, 90 empties.

Just happed to see 326 as I was crossing over the GR sub on 94 in Indiana. Has 7222 up front solo. Has a rear DPU but no idea on the number.

Any updates on 1776?

Went back to Walbridge on M568 last night.

Rear DPU on M326 is CSX 947
