Grand Elk horns heard in the distance at 10:42pm in the Wyoming area (54th to 44th). Warbled horn on the leader. Unknown direction of travel, probably a late northbound run.

Grand Elk came out of Elkhart heading for Kzoo passing the Elkhart cam at 05:09 with 2 SD units and 52 cars including a little bit of everything.

There was a run of 8 open top NS hoppers, 4 High Top types and 4 standards. I thought these were used for the glass cullet loading in Grand Rapids, but at least the standards were loaded with either coal or coke. I think Pfizer is done with coal — where might these have been going I wonder?

I’ve seen those NS black open top hoppers being loaded at Hughart Yard in Grand Rapids before.
The open top NS hoppers being loaded at Hughart are for glass cullet. See a discussion here: https://railroadfan.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... et#p460043

Perhaps recycling is up? But that doesn’t exactly answer my question about inbound Coke loads, unless some sales manager has a great knack for turning inbound loads into outbound loads…

Thanks for posting the discussion thread. From driving on the highway daily, it is hard to see what was loaded onto those standard open top hoppers. For your question about Coke, no idea where they load those.

Grand Elk north through Byron Center at 9:55pm. WAMX 4124, WAMX 4225, and 25 cars. Appears 4124 and 4225 must have been wyed somewhere as they usually don't face with 4124 north and 4225 south.
