Sounds like a road trip might be in the works in a couple of years. Always wanted to see a "new" rail line being constructed. Closest I've come are a few new spurs installed here and there and when CSX put the double track back on the B&O across Indiana and Ohio around the time they split up Conrail.

So unless you have a death wish it’s recommended we avoid such travel?

Have you ever been 'up north' in black fly season? You know how horse flies are when you are at a lake...multiply that by a hundred! Our neighbors have a resort up at Eagle Harbor in the Keweenaw. She doesn't open until the flies are done by the end of june.

Farthest I've been regularly is St. Ignace. Before this mess upended everything my bus route terminated there. I remember in the summer we couldn't stand outside and discuss the rumor mill at the station because of the mosquitos. I think I almost got picked up and carried away a few times. That may be too far south to have a huge black fly problem though.

Skeeters stick in a needle. Black flies take a BITE. When the breeze was from the east the beaches on Lake Michigan are a no go. The biters were always out and not worth even going to the beach. We have horse flies here on the lake later in the summer. They buzz around your head and are a nuisence. (sp)

when I talk to people that have never been to the U.P., I tell them not to go in June. I want them to enjoy it, not....never want to go back.

We used to go to Copper Harbor ever year when I was a kid in the summer and never went in June. After my wife and my train picture on a locomotive on our wedding day, we went for our honeymoon in 2001. My parents still go every year, now they are (and have been) retired and they rent a house right on the harbor for the month of September. Ah, the U.P. - no place like it.

Black flys knock on wood weren't that bad this past summer. The grass hoppers inland were like a snow storm though when you disturbed them. By Dr. No recommendation I believe the best week to come is August 5ish. That seems to be in my history of visiting and living here the best weather week.
