National Train Day Albuquerque, NM 2012

Unread post by mikerm19 »

My father and I decided to take a wander down to see what all the hubbub was all about. There were a few interesting model railroads set up, but the main event was the 1:1 scale:

Image
BNSF 6757. Was able to check out the cab, very nice. Far cry from a EMD SW9!

Image
2926's fully restored tender. The engine itself is still in progress of being restored. http://www.nmslrhs.org/

Image
Amtrak's 181 attached to a sleeper and a coach. I hadn't actually been in a sleeper before. It's nice, but expensive!

Image
Typical RailRunner commuter consist. Engine facing south and a cab car facing north. NMRX 104 around back and 1108 up front.

The cab car!

The controls!

After the main events we wandered down to the old Santa Fe Shops. About that time a storm was rolling in, so not very many pictures, but a couple really nice layouts and some building pictures later:

From right inside the front gate, the main building. There is another building to the right where all the exhibits were.

There was a guy saying that the turntable still worked, it looks like it would.

Image
There's the power for it, looks like it's in working or close to working condition.

The building is so long I couldn't get it in one frame.

The end of the long building and another building facing 2nd St. This whole property belongs to the Wheels Museum now (I don't know how much of the yard though). http://www.wheelsmuseum.org/

Hey Mike,

Thanks for sharing these shots! Looks like a really interesting display. I didn't know the ATSF 2926 group had been working on the tender already, but it looks awesome! That locomotive will get quite the attention when it's fully restored! I would love to see it!

It's also cool you could walk around the old ATSF locomotive facility to the south of the station. I always enjoyed going by that on the SW Chief.

Thanks again for sharing your photos!
