ImageNYC Transfer by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Coke train K357 waits for a new crew at the west end of the service track in Wyoming yard, with a C40-8W and an ES44DC for power. The track in foreground was what remained of the New York Central interchange/transfer track, about the only reminder of the NYC line from Allegan that crossed the Pere Marquette here at Lamar. The track was removed a few years later. 10/12/2008

ImageMonon by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A lone ES40DC sits on what's left of the old Monon Michigan City branch in the town of Monon, IN. The Gevo is apparently substituting for the usual Geep or SD that would normally be stationed here. The old depot now serves as the local yard office, but pretty much all of CSX's trains through Monon head right on through without stopping these days. 4/3/2022

ImageMcCords Intermediate by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

It's not the best photo, but its the only one I have of the old west-bound intermediate searchlight signal at McCords. It's a sunny but cold March day as Q335 begins its descent into the Thornapple valley behind a pair of BNSF SD70MACs, passing the C&O relic from the 1950s. It was removed later that year. 3/17/2007

ImageIn the Depths of CUS by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Metra #611, an EMD F40C built in 1974, stands ready under the dim lights of Chicago Union Station's north concourse. The aging EMD will soon blast off with yet another commuter train destined for the Milwaukee district. #611 and sister #614 were the last operable F40Cs on Metra at this point and were living on borrowed time, active only because the F40PH fleet was being cycled to Progress Rail for rebuilding. 3/10/2012

ImageKissimmee Arrival by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

A north-bound SunRail train arrives at the joint Kissimmee Amtrak/SunRail station. The old ACL depot stands at right. This is part of the former CSX "A Line" that was sold to the state of Florida to facilitate the commuter trains. Other than locals, pretty much all of the CSX trains that used to ply this line have been shifted over to the "S Line". 4/28/2022

Are they still owned by Metra?

611 and 614 are still currently owned by Metra, both are OOS and are now missing several parts. They will never run for Metra again. Hoping at least one gets preserved.

ImageMy First by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

Being a huge Conrail fan for most of my life, it was somewhat fitting that the first NS Heritage Unit I would encounter would be the Conrail one. Only a couple of months old at this point, the 8098 is doing every bit of 60 mph with Roadrailer train 264 on the old Wabash, blasting through the little town of Willis, MI. 4/22/2012

ImageSurfliner by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

An all-matching set of Surfliner equipment is interrupted by the addition of a standard Superliner car. Still, Amtrak's Surfliner trains looked good, and the F59PHIs were a very nice change from the standard P42s you would see everywhere else. All of these units have since been sold to Chicago's Metra, with new Chargers taking their place. Carpinteria, CA 3/12/2012

Image567 Goodness by Jonathon Leese, on Flickr

GLLX GP18 #921 and SW1200 #1512 idle together for the first time in Hartford on the West Michigan. Shortly they would back on to the cut of loaded hoppers behind them and the crew would test out the pair of old EMDs to make sure they played nice together. With the MP15s moving up to the new Hamilton Northwestern RR, 921 and 1512 will be the assigned units on the WMI going forward. 5/15/2022

Essexville coal empties running as E945 are coming around the 10 Track Wye and onto the Plymouth Subdivision at Milepost 25 in Plymouth. It was pretty unusual to see CSX power on these normally BNSF-powered trains, and even odder that it was a CW40-9/CW40-8 pair. 11/17/2011

I've never been much of a signal foamer, but I can say that I regret not shooting more of the classic TR-3 tri-lights that were once so common on the Grand Trunk Western. A pair of SD75Is are in command of a loaded autorack train from Flint as they grind past the intermediates near Swartz Creek. 12/9/2007

Wow! What an awesome image. I have always been a fan of the few fleeting moments of fading sun we get everyday. Thanks for sharing with us. The screen looks just like the memory I would burn in my mind.

Thank you for the nice picture and narration, SD80MAC.

I remember when HESR (CMGN) was carrying blue GTW box cars from the Central Warehouse. I think someone was transloading auto parts there.

Going back even further (1990's) CMGN used to pull blue GTW boxcars from a warehouse on the Harger Branch. Those were regular height box cars vs. the hi-cubes used later from Central Warehouse.

CSX B521 is sitting at South Deshler while getting a crew change with a CM44AH and an ES44AH leading the way, The van pictured to the left in the shot may be one of the most important vehicles in the railroading industry, without them, crews wouldn't be able to board trains in locations other than railyards.
