60i vs 60p

So I've been reading about 60i vs 60p for video recording, and I understand the interlaced/progressive ideas. I shoot in 1080p HD with the option of 60i or 60p. Thus far, I have used the default 60i. Should I be using 60p for moving trains?

"p" stands for progressive and "i" is for interlaced. With 60p, you get the whole picture every frame and with "i" you get half the picture every frame with alternating even/odd pixel sampling. Advantages and disadvantages to both. "p" generally is a better picture for motion as I recall and "i" is not as clear..

60p is one frame every 60th if a second; 60i is 1/2 a frame every 1/120th of a second.

If you are going to freeze-frame, progressive is better. If you are going to watch motion, interlaced is supposed to look "smoother." Whether that is useful, particularly at 60 fps, is debatable.

Photoshop will "deinterlace" a 30i or 60i single frame to progressive. It will not look as good as a 30p or 60p frame, but will be an improvement in the interlaced still.

I don't have a clue. I'd try both and see which you like better, *IF* you can spot a difference.

I'll try 60p for a bit and see how it goes...

That Trainorders thread is mostly incorrect.

If you have the option of shooting 60p, shoot 60p. Newer TVs and computer monitors are progressive. Interlaced video is the old standard that was used with CRTs although it continues to be the American broadcast television standard for those who broadcast 1080. Each frame was actually made up of two "fields" of video. Progressive video is a single field. That's really the only difference.

Wow, what a surprise.
