How do you organize photos?

Questions on editing, camera settings, equipment, critiques, how to upload photos, etc....

How do you organize photos?

Unread post by CAT345C »

I spent last night going thourgh 968 photos in my CPR/Soo Line folder and deleted about half of them, and made an excel file to classify the Engine #, date seen, # of photos, and when I finish I am gonna go thourgh and seperate them by model, and put a hyper link to the photo. I have about 15GBs on my new computer that I got in August, so after I finish up with this computer, I have a filled up HP computer in the basement with 20GB of photos on it. Most of the time its just the original photo, and the versons I tried to make look better, but ended up looking worse  Any one else classify their photos like this?

Break mine out into (done folders), AMTK, BNSF, CN, CP, CSX, NS, UP, MISC.
then into numerical order,date, symbol,time.

Raw images saved seprate by date taken.

Example done folder-BNSF-train # 0625-Q394-11:22 am 0n 2-18-06.

Burn to disk once a month in case computer pukes.

I started doing Engine # train symbol, and date since I know most of the locations I shoot, and also break down to WC, CSX, CN, CP etc... its only that I started doing that in January so photos from then to early 2004 are all image046 or "red train 3" all bringing back the glorious days with out knowledge of trains.

I organize almost everything by date.
All pictures taken on say...June 12, 2006, get put into a folder that is named "6-12-06". The editted pictures also go into that folder.
If I go out one day and see one train/take only one picture, I don't make a folder for it, and I just toss it loose into my "Trains" folder.
I also have a special folder for my PM 1225 pictures. That folder contains even more that are again broken down by date.
All of my non-train pictures are sorted this way as well.
In terms of how I name the auctual pictures once I edit them, I usually just use the locomotive number as the filename (i.e. CN2516.JPG, CP1293.JPG, etc.).

my new system of writing the #s down trackside works well! I tested it out yesterday with a coal train and Q335-20. Got home and put them into Excell.

Ah everyone should learn to take notes. I was never big on it until a couple of friends got me into it. Now I can lable all my photos. Dose not take much. All you need is Time, Loco numbers, cars, and direction if you want, oh and where you saw it. Some guys buy those cheep small hand held recorders, and then talk into them, and write it down later.
