Good list. Don't forget GTW 4070 (Alco 2-8-2) undergoing yet another restoration in Cleveland at Midwest Railway Preservation Society. She has a very interesting history, and was one of the last steam locomotives to operate on the Mount Clemens sub in local service.Rode behind her once at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic, several seasons ago now.

Ex-GTW GP9's 4545 and 4554 are with ADBF

not to pester, but what about the GTW GP9Rs? theres a few left on CN's roster and Most all of them out working still on various places.

i kinda assumed it wasn't done, but i thought i'd ask. i have their dispositions written down here too as i'm that nerd who keeps track of certain sets of power as well. (no idea where its at since I moved though) in a box i'm sure.

GTW S2 #8110 now Tate and Lyle 8110 is the last surviving GTW S2 and the oldest surviving GTW diesel locomotive.

GTW 8197 was stored at the Railroad Museum of greater Cleveland until a few years ago when she was believed to be scrapped. Shes believed to have been the last suviving GTW S4 unless an old GTW Relco unit is sitting around.

GTW CS9 which is an Alco S4 refitted with a CAT motor engine by the GTW battle creek shops #1002 now Corydon Railway 86 still does regular work.

Wow! Had no idea one of the NW2s was still around. Added to the list!

An RRpicturearchives comment says after receiving the cab rebuild the locomotive was sent to Industrial Maintenance Services of Hammond, Indiana. I decided to look up Industrial Maintenance Services of Hammond, Indiana but came up with nothing. The comment below states this locomotive later became US Steel 39. I looked up the US Steel roster on RRPictures and found a 39. I believe it has been misidentified as an SW1000. The cab windows and placement of headlights line up and on top of that the hood doesn’t have the overhang that the usual SW1000’s have (E.G attached photo) on the long hood. It even has the dip just before the cab which was never a design on SW1000’s IIRC. I looked up the all time roster of SW1000’s built on Wikipedia and not one lists US Steel ordering one leaving me to believe this is in fact GTW 7910.

I also think the identification of this locomotive as CNW 1004 is incorrect. If the cab was rebuilt in GTW paint then this locomotive shouldn’t have the rounded as-built hood and instead the SW-14 cab.


Even if it isn’t GTW heritage after all I still really hope this unit is around. It was last spotted in 2010 and looks like it was ready to be fired up unless there was some nasty engine failure under the body.

SW1000 might simply be that unit's rebuilt designation. There are lots of "SW1000s" out there that weren't built as actual cataloged EMD SW1000s.

GTW SW1200 1269 (could be 1209 according to latest photo) is from a 1957 delivery of SW1200’s to the GTW from EMD. I’ll have to check the roster records on me but at some point she was transferred to the Central Vermont and then sold to a party in South Dakota called the Ellis and Eastern RR.
