Resubmitted as the first time I asked this it was in the wrong forum.

Does anyone know if any U33C's are still operating or on display anywhere? Or are they all gone? If they're all scrapped, when was the last one scrapped?

Another question: Could one (theoretically, at least) up-rate a U30C to a U33C or something like that?

The only surviving U33C is actually a former Erie Lackawanna/New Jersey Transit U34CH, which was the HEP-equipped passenger version of the U33C. It's preserved at the United Railroad Historical Society in NJ and is slowly being restored to operating condition.

6 axle U series GEs did not fare well on the preservation front. As of now, there is 1 U23C, 1 U25C, 1 U28C, 4 U30Cs, and 1 U34CH in preservation. I'm not sure if you could simply retune a U30C into a U33C or not.

It would be possible to make a U30 out of a U33---the process is called de-rating, and involves re-setting the fuel injector rack, and a few other issues. This process also de-stresses the internals of the diesel, and usually de-creases fuel consumption, as the engine is not using as much fuel. The 4 LSRC, former Detroit And Mackinac Alco C425's were actually de-rated to 2,000 HP. if I remember correctly.

Jon, where is the U25C at? Is there more than the one on display in Marquette?
