Yeah, NYSW picked up 2 or 3 ex NS SD70M-2s. Nice catch.

NYSW 4060 was 2751.

That's 5, and they were classified as "Junk", what makes them junk? If they have the 710 series two strokes...is it the trucks? Suspension?

They are 16 years old... and they are early enough units that the “isolation” for the cabs isn’t so isolated... they rode rough too from what I understand. The SD70ACe’s CSX had were worse.

That’s actually 4... the 3553 is an SD40-2.

The early SD70M-2s and SD70ACes did not have isolated cabs. They are so loud and vibrate so badly that the BNSF has banned them from leading trains. That's also why, among many other reasons, CSX dumped their SD70ACes.

Looks like these have the Altoona designed cabs, does that help with their ride issue?

SD70M-2s are off-the-shelf units from EMD. You might be thinking of something else?

Not sure what it could be... none of the Altoona cabs look like that.

NS also listed 46 EMD SD70ACU rebuilds for sale. The AC44C6M rebuilds seem to be favored over EMD products now.

Maybe emissions requirements are easier with 4 strokes? Or possibly future upgrade paths easier with GE for NS? Find it interesting the sd40-2 from the 1970's and 80's still are "useful" . But sd60 & 70's are cast off with far less years on them. Like steam before them, two strokes are from another era? And EMD is probably behind the curve on 4 stroke tech explaining the GE take over. A little surprising as Caterpillar was at the forefront of diesel in the trucking industry for decades. Then dropped out for a bit, now back. Not like they don't know how to build a diesel. For my part, as a rail "fan" vs. actually being in the busines, I'm fortunate the railroads I photograph and watch are all two stroke EMD powered.. my preferred brand & technology to railfan. :)
