NS Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread

Unread post by ns8401 »

Since we have a CSX one, we may as well have an NS one. I'll update it as I get it though after this July report, these are much longer if I wait that much, credit for these is to Chris Toth from http://www.NSdash9.com and Lance Myers from http://www.Altoonaworks.info:

NS GP38-2's 5008 and 5011 came off lease to Norfolk Portsmouth Belt Line (NPBL) where they had been since 2007. Both were repainted into full NS colors from black with NPBL on the long hood. GP38-2 5261 was sent to NPBL and had all NS logos and markings painted out in black. White NPBL letters were placed on the long hood, the unit kept the white eyebrow.

NS will be assigning it's newest SD70ACe units, 1100 to 1124, to premium intermodal trains on the Chicago to New Jersey and Baltimore service lanes. They will operate in 3 unit sets.

NS Has acquired NYSW SD70M units 4050, 4052 and 4054 and they will be numbered 2779-2781.

The SD75M units that NS is getting will now be numbered 2800-2806.

Yeah you're right. Remind me, what are the CSX 4000 thru 4050 again?

Plus, you can rebuild locomotives and still have the same engine too. Several of Our puller and hump sets have been "rebuilt" within the last 5 years but are still SD40-2.

They're units that are hard for a fat guy to get behind the control stand!

Are these going to be NS or CP units? I know what they have now are the SD30ECO's (or whatever) but hadn't heard of a Geep version yet.

The NS GP33ECOs are slug mothers for the RPE4s as far as I know. CPs Eco Geeps (GP20C-ECOs??) are rebuilt from GP9s.

All the units are NS for these reports. The CP GP20C-ECO units are being built by EMD Muncie for CP using provided components from CP. The GP33ECO units are an in house NS rebuild of NS GP50 units for NS. All that the two projects share is ECO on the end.

There are no GP33ECO units yet but it does not appear they will be masters. RP-E4C units mate with GP40-2's. RP-M4C units with GP59's. The GPTEB's with NS's two GP22ECO units.

Are the ECO units receiving parts and such as part of the "ECO" package that EMD offers? It is just that NS is doing the work instead of EMD?

No, just 12-710 ECO engines inside of a NS package that will have a modified carbody similar to the GP59E units they have been putting out and the obligatory Admiral cab. The 33 is 3-thousand HP, Tier 3 emissions, ECO engine. The Dash 8.5 GE rebuilds shipped from Roanoke to Altoona yesterday for emissions testing and paint as well.

So: GP50 + EMD ECO engine package + NS rebuild package = NS GP33ECO ??

Yes, 4 axle, the 33 meaning what I described above. 3-thousand HP, Tier 3 emissions, EMD ECO prime mover.

Can't be any worse then those old GE boats to get through the doors and down the walkways can they?

BTW, I can provide you with the engineer local chairman who did the layout/placement of everything if you'd like to complain. He was quite proud of his work, but I've heard less than stellar reviews.

Since noone has posted it, or i've missed it, i'll share... NS has offically agreed to take over the lease on the CSXT SD80Mac's at the end of the year. this is on Eastern rail news if you'd like to view the article. i'm not a subscriber, so i cant copy the article.

ALSO, NS has bought 100 UP SD90/43MAC's. They will be run as is to help with power shortages and when they can, be rebuilt to SD70ACE specs while keeping the SD90 body.

SD9043MAC's are to become NS 7230-7329, they are coming from EMD/Progress Rail. This will leave 7217-7229 vacant which would provide room behind the existing 80MAC's for the CSX ones.

Now what I've heard about the SD80MACs is that it is a trade, with a number of SD40-2s going to CSX. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
