Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
One final repaint for Q2 2013. #527, a CW44AH. Painted by Waycross from YN2 to YN3B. Bob M says he suspects many GE repaints from Waycross could be out there unreported, so keep your eyes open!
Current Totals:
- CW44AH: 57
- GE Total: 927
- Grand Total: 1068

Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
Alrighty, with the 2nd Quarter of 2013 over, it is time to dive into the numbers from the YN2 paint list. First, the raw numbers, then some trends and forecasts.
General Electric
Type......Q1-End...Q2-End...Change
GE Total.....936.....927..........-9
AC60CW......83.......83..........None
AC4460CW....3........3...........None
CW44AH.....58........57...........-1
AC44CW....373........367.........-6
C40-9W......43........42..........-1
C40-8W......249......249..........None
C40-8........102......101..........-1
B40-8.........2.........2............None
B20-8........16........16...........None
RCPHG4......7.........7............None
Electro-Motive Division
Type.......Q1-End...Q2-End...Change
EMD Total...160......141........-19
SD70MAC.....12.......12..........None
SD70M.........3.........2..........-1
SD60...........1.........1..........None
SD60M.........3.........3..........None
SD60I..........5.........5..........None
SD50-2........5..........4.........-1
SD40-2........73........67........-6
GP40-2........15........14........-1
GP38-2........32........24........-8
GP38-2S.......2.........1.........-1
GP15-1........6..........6..........None
MP15AC.......2..........1..........-1
SW1500.......1..........1...........None
Grand Total: 1096 to 1068, Minus 28
Trends
Well, the most striking trend is the depletion of EMDs. Not only did twice as many EMDs see the paint booth in the last 3 months, there are about 4 times as many GEs than EMDs, so the imbalance is even greater.
Another interesting tidbit is the GP38-2s are disappearing quick. Nearly half of the EMDs removed were 38 dash twos.
Another trend, the pace of repaints has slowed. In Q1, CSX was busy repainting an average of 4 units each week for those 12 weeks, while in the last 12 weeks, they only did slightly better than two.
Forecasts
Based on Q2 trends, the following groups will be gone by:
All YN2: 9.4 years
GE YN2: 25.75 years
EMD YN2: 1.85 years
Obviously, those are very off-balance. The trends over Q1 AND Q2 are probably more accurate:
All YN2: 7.6 years
GE YN2: 17 years
EMD YN2: 1.5 years
Now these are of course current trend lines. Chances are GEs, particularly C40-8(W)s, AC44CW(AH)s and AC60CWs, will start to drop like flies eventually as they reach their mid-life rebuilds.

Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
I'm not sure if CSX leases their GE AC4400s, but many of their GE units' leases are to expire in the next 2-3 years with many Class Is. CSX might return them all together where they could find a home to some shortlines.

Most leases like that are 15 or 20 years. Railroads can either purchase the power after the lease or return it to the lessor.

Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
For the first ten years after their delivery, CSX 497-546, while showing as rostered, were listed as "lease". None of the others prior ever showed this way. Currently, or the last I knew anyway, only ten still show as leased, 547-556. I show 497-546 as being built in 2001, 547-556 (and up to 599) built in 2002. It was this last order where the paint scheme changed from YN2 to YN3 between 556 & 557.Chrisracer8903 wrote:I'm not sure if CSX leases their GE AC4400s, but many of their GE units' leases are to expire in the next 2-3 years with many Class Is. Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
I've got two new repaints. First is the 7562, which was reported in the other thread, but now confirmed, and the 8864, which was recently spotted in a stored/retired line in Waycross, in YN3. We're not sure if it is retired or stored just yet, but we can remove it from the list regardless.
Our Current YN2 Totals:
- C40-8: 99
- SD40-2: 65
- GE: 924
- EMD: 138
- Total: 1062
Total of two repaints discoveries for the week ending 8-5. We've had an average of 1 over the last 5 weeks.

Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
Time to make "new" paint changes on my master list. It has been three days short of FOUR MONTHS since my last total changes, and could up with "only" 32 paint changes since April 15. I say only, because we sometimes can come up with that many in just two months.
Todays changes, all from YN2 to YN3 or YN3B. Of the 32 changes, 7 were YN2 to YN3, as all were painted last year but only just discovered, while 25 others were YN2 to YN3B. 21 of 32 changes came from EMD units, only 11 from GE units.
This makes the new totals, some which has also recently been reported by MQT3001, shows 1,062 units remaining In YN2 (924 GE, 138EMD) with 3,143 now in YN3 (including the new units being delivered up through 3119. Of the 3,143 units in YN3, 303 of them are now YN3B. Of the 303 in YN3b, 114 have come from repaints, as the rest are units delivered new, or, the last 10 SD40-3 rebuilds. Of the 114 repaints, 54 of them are YN3 to YN3b units, 60 from YN2 or pre YN2.
For the purpose of this report, here are locomotive numbers of the paint changes discovered since April 15. Units from YN2 to YN3 will have an asterisk by it (*) The others will be from YN2 to YN3b.
138,145,297*,328,414,520,527,1192,2430,2697,2729*,2755,2760,2688,2797*,2799,2806,2811*,4679,6072,6966*,
7562,7589,7644,8052,8205,8218,8357,8464,8621,8864*,9030.
For the record, SD40-2 8318 still shows on the Umler Roster as YN1, 8865 as Conrail, even though neither has run for quite some time now, and not expected to. New umler roster data will be reported soon if there are any changes.

Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
Just a quick question. I've heard CSX retired 2758 that was still in Conrail paint, and was supposedly going to scrap it as of January 2013. But, this picture is saying entirely otherwise - does anyone happen to know what the deal is with this unit? http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=3522314
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
I got footage of a retired unit like that, there's a fence so can't tell if it's 2758 or 2756. The latter would make sense. There's the clip, it's at the very beginning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh-dLkeLP0EiKJames wrote:Just a quick question. 2758 would be the unit in that clip, good to know it's still like that then. Makes sense that picture would potentially be 2756 then. Thanks for sharing this, I was doubting the picture at first since it just didn't seem reasonable but I know anything is and can be possible.Pie39 wrote:I got footage of a retired unit like that, there's a fence so can't tell if it's 2758 or 2756. Re: CSX YN2 Paint List
Another repaint was just discovered. This time it is YN2 to YN3B repaint 8878, and SD40-2. Once upon a time, not to long ago, this number series (8800) was supposed to be retired. Well, there have been several repaints there of late, so I guess you can draw your own conclusions.

THAT 2758 is definitely retired, so it's possible that another geep is now the active 2758iKJames wrote:2758 would be the unit in that clip, good to know it's still like that then.
