Re: West Michigan RR Abandonment Petition Coming
The DNR trail plan covers the Lawrence to Paw Paw segment, except for the 1.5 mile stretch in the middle of it. That part is not clear to me. The railroad plan seems to involve far west end, at or near Hartford.

Re: West Michigan RR Abandonment Petition Coming
I believe milepost 19.88 is Lawrence, and milepost 30.2 is Paw Paw. What is between milepost 25.1 and milepost 26.5, which is not included in the trail use negotiations? Is that the right of way that passes Lake Cora? https://www.stb.gov/filings/all.nsf/ba7f93537688b8e5852573210004b318/213f8f81a23a6...

Re: ADBF STB Petition for Declaratory Relief: CE
That is interesting info, SousaKerry. Was the idea to re-install the diamond at RC, or to build two new interchange tracks, one in a quadrant to the south of RC and the other to the north of RC? MDOT has on its wish list among other things, a goal of getting the interchange out of Adrian. Fast Fredd...

Re: ADBF STB Petition for Declaratory Relief: CE
Questions: 1. Does the lumber yard in Adrian still get service? I guess I should have phrased the question "is the lumber yard still there?" I haven't traveled to that part of Adrian in a long time. 2. ADBF seems to be searching for new interchange possibilities (proposal to re-build to Ottawa Lake;...

ADBF STB Petition for Declaratory Relief: CE
A lengthy petition (135 pages) concerning a dispute between the railroad and the power company over easements for power line poles in the city of Adrian. Some interesting points within, such as the number of cars the railroad handles on an annual basis (2,500); the number of customers (10, plus an u...

If the focus in North Baltimore is to be switched from intermodal to manifest, what does that mean for Willard?

Re: Riga-Ottawa Lake project
Applying for a grant and being awarded the grant are two completely different animals. I have applied for many grants via my workplace. A few applications have been successful, but the vast majority have not. And as the article notes, these TIGER grants are extremely competitive. Nearby ND&W applied...

Re: Napoleon, Defiance and Western: The Definitive Thread
"No real major projects I know of, but you can get a 21 car train the length of the railroad without derailment now." Good to hear, Bulby. What a difference from the MAW times. Pioneer certainly has pulled that line out of the swamp, literally and figuratively. And I'll bet they have seen an uptick ...

Re: Work in Grawn?
Cherry Growers stopped using rail years ago. Someone will correct me but I believe this had to do with their switch from being required to use glass bottles to ship apple juice to their main shipper, a military facility in Texas, said bottles which lent themselves to shipment by rail, to plastic bot...

Re: Yooper rail may be on the come back
Agreed, good collection of articles. My family left that area a long time ago. But it is still interesting to see what is happening, railroad-and otherwise, in that neck of the woods. Some of my fondest memories involve seeing a Soo line F unit, a car or two, and a caboose running through Houghton, ...

Re: Allen Road Crossing back in the news...
At Vickers, NS (and its predecessors), has priority over CSX. This often meant long delays due to blocked CSX crossings in Northwood, where Vickers is located, as well as adjacent Oregon. Northwood is a small town with a subsequently small annual budget, so it took many years to save up its matching...

Re: Napoleon Defiance & Western railfanning
ND&W serves two cold storage places (Cloverleaf and Interstate) that are in the industrial park in Napoleon, at the far east end of the line. One or both get tomato paste in hi-cube boxcars, as well as vegetables in the reefers you saw. All of this product is then trucked to Campbell's in Napoleon. ...

Re: Railfanning Monroe
I wouldn't post this separately because it isn't especially noteworthy, but because there is an active Monroe thread I thought I would add that there has been a string of autoracks sitting on the former Ford spur that passes under I-75 for a couple of weeks. Earlier this year there were some gondola...

Re: Napoleon Defiance & Western railfanning
I haven't been there since last fall, but I suspect maintenance is ongoing, grants or not. They have done a lot of work, and there is always more to do. In terms of traffic, I recall reading an annual report for Pioneer a couple of years ago that noted about 2,000 cars annually were shipped on the N...

Schedule? They run M-F. Follow US24 and you can't miss them, as the line is in full view from the highway in most places. Start in Napoleon and work your way west. Their yard and office is in Defiance. There is more activity on the section from Defiance to Woodburn now, as some of the interchange th...

Sumner Street Bridge in Toledo Coming Down
If you've ever visited MLK Plaza in Toledo, then you've seen this bridge, which is just to the west of the station. I've watched and photographed trains from there many times over the years, albeit less frequently and never alone as I've gotten older. The amount of clearance is somewhat disconcertin...

Re: ANN ARBOR RAILROAD UPDATES
AA's Temperance Yard... Yes, Temperance Yard is what I meant. Ottawa Yard is AA's main yard, next to FCA Jeep. As I get older I swear I would forget my name if people didn't use it so often :( The history of Toledo railroading is a complex one. AARR is right on with what he notes. There are always c...

Re: ANN ARBOR RAILROAD UPDATES
the backside seems like an odd setup... Backside ownership is still part CSX and part NS. CSX ownership ends where the switch on the south side of Laskey Road was located. West of the switch, NS owned the Backside. NS used the Backside to access the Anderson's facility in Maumee. Their long and slow...

Re: ANN ARBOR RAILROAD UPDATES
Thanks, Waddy. Good to know that Smucker's is still getting product. Thanks, AARR. I didn't know AA switched the Ford mixing center. I thought CSX had that one. Perstorp is switched by NS, via a spur from the Detroit line that crosses Matzinger Road and then goes into the plant. OmniSource is switch...
