Re: One of the best railfan twitter pages I've ever seen
Didn't Trains publish one of his photos on the newswire a while back? I seem to recall that the story disappeared pretty quickly, but I was amazed at tbe quality of WDTX1402's work, even if it wasn't exactly accurate. It was interesting to see one of the more influential media sources in the hobby p...

Re: Bulk Salt Shipments by Rail (St. Clair County)- 1970's
Looking forward to your project GLRF Sorry, I've been meaning to respond to this. I was keeping the project I mentioned quiet until I was able to mention it (albeit rather haphazardly) to the people who had kind of inspired it. The tangible, in-your-face element of the project is a website that I'm...

Re: Using waybills
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for or not, but...some of the guys like to operate with car cards and such on our traveling modular layout. I think the base of the system they use is a Micro-Mark product. BUT the Micro-Mark product is preprinted, so you either need really neat handwritin...

Re: Bulk Salt Shipments by Rail (St. Clair County)- 1970's
I know someone who worked at the St. Clair plant in the 1960's. He says it was common to load up to 20 40' box cars on first shift and another four or five on second shift. There was a small yard on the other side of the street and two tracks into the loading shed. It usually took a couple cuts fro...

Re: Bulk Salt Shipments by Rail (St. Clair County)- 1970's
A few years ago they were occasionally shipping by rail (boxcar). I haven't talked to anyone who works there lately to find out if that's still the case yet or not.
The railroad still has access to the plant though, as far as I know.

Re: What are our least favorite locomotives?
Anything steam, but I have particular disdain for the Reading 2100. EDIT: I missed the "... and why" in the original post. How many (currently active) steam engines pull (revenue) freight? The 1225 might've done so once, more than a decade ago, but I prefer watching freight trains over passenger tra...

Something is southbound on the Mt. Clemens Sub, probably through downtown Mt. Clemens right now, moving slowly, with a UP DPU. Whatever the symbol is, it just cleared Hall Road/M-59.

Re: Lake State paint color
Try searching for BFI blue using a search engine. It's an automotive paint color. Lawson Products has it in a spray can: https://www.lawsonproducts.com/Lawson/High-Solids-Paints-BFI-Blue/1509197.lp It looks like the Lawson page has the color in stock, but I'm not sure that it'll be compatible with a...

Re: Keys to chasing trains
Scanners are still illegal in Indiana, but are not in Ohio and Michigan. Uh oh, I used mine in Elkhart... Get a ham radio license. The reasoning is (unless something has changed) the ham license is under federal law and allows the use of the scanner. Federal law trumps state (Indiana) law, ...

Bulk Salt Shipments by Rail (St. Clair County)- 1970's
This post mostly is a follow-up to some posts in the Chat area over the weekend (which have disappeared). Someone was asking about what kind of shipments were made in 2 bay covered hoppers in the '70's. I've been doing some research into commodities shipped and how those commodities were shipped, wh...

Are you going to have access to a vehicle or are you looking for locations that can be accessed via public transportation (i.e Metra/CTA/etc)?

Don't loose your mind when you see steam, especially if you're behind the wheel. I know a guy...who chased 765 from Durand to Owosso (a few years ago) and passed on the outside of a curve (and some other really dangerous things) because he was way more focused on the steam engine than anything else....

Re: MIGN Customers
I have a couple copies of (PH&D) waybills from carloads of LPG that were shipped from St. Clair to Petoskey. The routing shows C&O to Reed City to MIGN. The consignee was Pyrofax Gas Corp. Unfortunately they don't show who the actual recipient of the car was. Both are from May 1977, but I'm pretty s...

Re: LSRC to Welcome Long-Term Strategic Investment
I dug around in old issues of the Federal Register available through the Library of Congress online. The trackage rights became effective on March 20, 1989 between MP 272.5 and MP 332.3. No other details provided, and the transaction was exempt from ICC approval under 49 CFR 1180.2(d)(7). 49 CFR § ...

Re: LSRC to Welcome Long-Term Strategic Investment
I would assume that CSX and CN possess copies. I wouldn’t know where to look online to see if there’s a copy. Oh. When you stated that the trackage rights were non-transferable, I wondered if you had an online source that stated they're non-transferable. I had heard the same elsewhere and have been...

Re: LSRC to Welcome Long-Term Strategic Investment
CN’s trackage rights contract with CSX running over the Flint Sub to access the PH&D is non-transferable if CSX was to sell the line. Additionally, LSRC would not gain rights to run over the CN yard to go from their paper mill spur to the Marysville branch. They would have to have power on each lin...

Deshler in June? If everything works out ok, we'll be there, at least on Saturday. I've been looking forward to bringing my wife to one of the meets, so she can meet some of the characters in the railfan stories I've told her about the good old days of the RailroadFan.com meets (i.e. before COVID). ...
