Re: GR & Saugatuck 1998 - Help with Locations

First shot, the church in background is Basilica of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, 654 Davis Avenue, NW, Grand Rapids. Church is still very much still there.

Re: GM Wyoming plant trackage (Burlingame Plant)

Railroad tracks east of Burlingame were installed by C&O in 1939/40 to service the General Motors Diesel Equipment Division plant. It is my understanding that the tracks extended to near Burlingame from the west to service the aluminum plant, also built for the war effort. General Motors paid C&O to...

Re: Kinney Spur and Penn Junction

I grew up near the corner of Kinney and Richmond and spent many days walking the tracks from Bristol to Kinney. No, there was no lumber yard near the intersection of Kinney and 3-Mile, but there was a large lumber shed. The lumber shed was on the south side of the tracks, immediately east of Kinney...

Re: GM Wyoming plant trackage (Burlingame Plant)

Just saw your comment/question. What you may not realize is that there were two road crossings of Burlingame Ave. for C&O to access the GM plant. The switch was located on the west side of Burlingame Ave. When you traveled down Burlingame every day, you certainly knew it because they weren't always ...

From http://railroadfan.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30884#p319466 Dec 4, 2014 FWIW, The GM plant was a war-built facility, beginning manufacturing in 1941/42. GM planned regular visits by a company photographer to record the construction and these photo albums were still in the facility as of 1990...

Re: Spur over Chicago Drive - Grand Rapids

Primarily the M1 carbine. Contract was originally given to Saginaw Steering Gear, then transferred to Diesel Equipment. Original production was on Hall Street, SE until the new building on Burlingame was close enough to being ready. Obviously from the name, all diesel fuel injectors and fuel systems...

Re: Spur over Chicago Drive - Grand Rapids

The (very) early history of GMC - Diesel Equipment Division goes back to GMC - Saginaw Steering Gear. In 1940, Saginaw Steering Gear (SSG) was awarded a contract to manufacture M1 carbines (among many others) during the build-up toward WWII. SSG decided to manufacture the carbines in Grand Rapids an...

Re: Non SLR Digi Cam Battery ?

Karl, I have that exact same camera and I think it serves my purposes very well. The camera will not operate on rechargeable AA batteries, which are typically Ni-Cad. The batteries must be Lithium-Ion. I've done this a couple of ways. I always keep a spare set of Li-Ion AA batteries as a backup in m...

Michael,

You may also enjoy David Haward Bain's THE OLD IRON ROAD. It's not really a companion to THE EMPIRE EXPRESS, but it sure compliments it. I enjoyed both and you may also.
