Re: CN Flagging crossings in Pontiac
I'd wager an exercise in risk mitigation vs. an actual problem. Paste a car at a crossing and have a lawyer find out you were "testing" new equipment across a public roadway. What could be so different with these coaches that there would be an issue with crossing protection? I think it’s less cross...

Re: Amtrak Train Location Updates - 2021
According to IDOT, 952 departed CHI a little after 0700L today, 1/25. Last time I checked on the signals at Asylum, they were still showing “stop”, and I haven’t heard anything pass other than 351. 365 is approaching Kalamazoo now. My guess is that 952 will make an appearance after 365 has disappear...

Re: Great Lakes Central Passenger TC
This whole start-up proposal begs some questions. Is SRI involved with this project even remotely? Were the 2 Amtrak domes bought to supplement this consist? Would this be a revenue stream since the embezzlement, no polar express etc? Are the MDOT Burlington cars involved? Just what equipment did t...

Re: Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25
John Gray did hit the nail on the head though: this is all about money. Freight wants to keep the Wall Street buffoons happy and they don’t care how it gets done. We see it time and again with 12000-foot trains, ridiculous fuel saving measures that result in trains struggling to maintain track spee...

Re: Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25
Think back a few years. FedEx team drivers with doubles made the trip between east and west coasts in four days. TOFC took five days. FedEx needed a four day service and asked for an expedited service once a week. BNSF looked at not just the cost of the train but the delay to everything else so the...

Re: Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25
By the way, they did research doing their own ROW to Chicago. It’s in the plan from 2019. I’m not sure where it stands at this point but Amtrak is still exploring all options to fix the timing issues that NS doesn’t seem all that motivated to fix. Plan or wish list? When someone says plan I expect ...

Re: Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25
Someone needs to visit Switzerland to watch how they handle a much greater volume of trains over a single track. If the trains are close to their schedules, there should be little congestion on this part of the line. If double track is needed anywhere, it is at Ann Arbor where trains are often held...

Re: New Connection in New Buffalo AMTK.
...it's a project that could easy be the high six figures. I'm just pulling this number out of thin air, but I'd say $2.5- 3 million would be the likely amount. Sounds about right; it has that look of something quoted in an email response from Amtrak or MDOT. How about $20 million... Scroll down to...

Re: New Connection in New Buffalo AMTK.
Practical meaning "likely to succeed or be effective in real circumstances", no. Amtrak and the state are already strapped for cash. Neither is likely to put resources into building a connection for the infrequent passenger who wants to go east that won't travel to Niles or take the bus that alread...

Re: Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25
8 trains a day plus whatever locals NS runs and Amtrak needs to make that 2 main track territory? What they really need to do is improve the dispatch reliability so that the trains are at the proper sidings at the proper times. Amtrak is foreseeing growth on the AML corridor. As a result, they want...

Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25
Amtrak released their FY20-25 line plans. One big change (for us Michiganders) is that Amtrak is seriously evaluating connecting the sidings between Niles and Kalamazoo, effectively restoring most of the double track. Amtrak believes this will alleviate capacity concerns while also eliminating delay...

Re: CN puts Wisconsin-Michigan-Ontario lines up for sale
Let's quell most of the rumors here, all lines being put up for sale in the US are in the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin. The only 2 lines presently that are in Michigan on the block is the Newberry line from Trout Lake to Munising, and the White Pine Branch that has been mothballed for several year...

Re: GDLK Operations
Grand Elk nabbed another ped today in the vicinity of Cork and S. Burdick in Kalamazoo. Looks like 501 or whatever they’re calling the south end local now. 4009 leading.
Victim is alive and was cited by KDPS for trespassing on ROW. Apparently they had their headphones in.
