Re: GDLK Operations
CN had about 170 cars on the Pavilion branch siding at Kilgore. Seems like a lot for what customers are in Kalamazoo? This was an observation by someone else. Any ideas why this would be?

Re: GDLK Operations
Sorry "Z" does this mean I'm banned forever now. Every time it was discussed with the Elk by me about Three Rivers yard the face of the General Manager was always different in the office. It has always seemed to be the most beneficial way to solve some of the problems up north in Kazoo. I've also th...

Re: GDLK Operations
Since their inception they've used 2 road trains and a local to get a car from Elkhart to Grand Rapids assuming a local gets it to the final customer. 302 takes whole train to Kazoo. There a yard crew breaks it apart in Botsford and separates the cars for GR, the south local, and the Pfzier job. Als...

Re: GDLK Operations
Last I talked to the trainmaster, the 501 crew has been abolished for now. Usually runs as a 503 crew. 102 is usually called as needed. Remember these are crew numbers, not train symbol numbers. 503 would be the south local, 302 & 303 would be north and south road freights. 105 would be the Pfizer t...

Re: Coldwater: Water Column
We built it ourselves ( LRRR). We do fill Numbers 1 & 110 with it the weekends they run. The Old Road depots usually had 2 of these between the main track and the passing siding. If you look at old pictures Sturgis actually had a bend in the passing sidings to clear the base of the columns. The new ...

Re: Ameriwood Industries Dowagiac
Thanks for correcting the Amtrak count, do you know how often the Burns Harbor job is running per week? Seems radio traffic from them is way down on the line.

Re: Graphic Packaging White Piegon
There's going to be a bigger hit for the local trucking companies that ship and store this product. P&P, CMS and some mom and pop local drivers had a lot of outbound loads as the trailers sitting outside attested to.

Re: Ameriwood Industries Dowagiac
5 years ago the Burns Harbor job would switch them a couple times a week on their way to Decatur and Lawton. Usually got a few centerbeams and an ocasional box car. Last few years this like just dried up for them. Even the elevator in Decatur hasn't shipped much recently. Lousy growing season or wha...

Re: Graphic Packaging White Piegon
A few kaolin (Theil) cars a month. Not sure how much product went out by rail? Maybe 1trackmind could fill us in on that? In two years the new Kalamazoo plant was to replace this mill plus Battle Creek, Middletown Oh, East Angus Canada and the current Kazoo plant. What they call capacity neutral. To...

Graphic Packaging White Piegon
It was announced today Graphic Pkg. WP would be closing its doors June 30. This has been in the works when they announced building their new plant in Kalamazoo. They said there was 2 years to go for the employees but with the discovery of PFAS compounds on the grounds and in the watershed around the...

Yes 16 was the unit that Sargent Sand owned. Use to see it lug 6 loaded sand hoppers from Ludington State Park thru Epworth Heights to the C&O in Ludington. The current Kraft Foods commercial has a BNSF hopper in the Kendallville maccoroni and cheese plant that 16 served.

Re: GDLK Operations
It came from Defiance Ohio to replace the 907. Pioneer has been moving units around since the Kendalville switcher went OOS. Elkhart and Western is down to one unit also. Maybe 1603 is back-up for them and MSO?

Ameriwood Industries Dowagiac
Ameriwood permanently laid off all 79 positions at Dowagiac. The move is in response to the governors stay at home order. They will turn the plant from manufacturing to a distribution center. Looks like the Burns Harbor turn won't have any work here for a while.

Did the 2 centerbeams you were looking for come from CN or NS to GDLK? I heard they are getting equal amounts from both class 1s?

Re: New Bridge Over Manistee River
Any updates or activity around the bridge lately. MDOT highway contractors are out and about with the warm weather spell. Wondered if anybody snowmobiling or 4 wheeling had seen anything?
