Re: South Haven Q&A

I looked at the NOAA historic charts website. Maps back to the 1930s show a connection but what looks like two separate yards. I would expect that there would have been some interchange there but I doubt it amounted to much. 1934: https://www.historicalcharts.noaa.gov/image.php?filename=76-8-1934 19...

Re: South Haven Q&A

Here is a map of South Haven dated 1912. The Map shows the MC and PM Fruit Belt tracks cross but no interchange. https://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/38152/South+Haven/Van+Buren+County+1912/Michigan/ The book “The Pere Marquette in 1945” does not show any interchange at South Haven but does show ...

Not Michigan. There is not a Street View of the crossing from the road but there is one from a train.

How much of the 4 hour delay was for law enforcement to conduct their investigation?

I believe you found it Dan. I located a color aerial from 2005 and that building has a brown roof.

Re: Where Is It?

Mt Pleasant is certainly a possibility but I don't know for sure. It is a shot from the 1 minute mark of this video of a 1225 excursion, so based on the rest, I assume the mystery spot is between Owosso & Clare. Was hoping someone would recognize that building. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RZWS...

Re: Questions about Grand Elk

IIRC when it was PRR, there was a signal just north of Miller Rd, north of Plainwell. The concrete that it sat on is visible from Miller Rd. It may have had to do with the PRR/NYC diamond that used to be in Plainwell, but I'm not sure. The PRR /NYC crossing at Plainwell was interlocked. Tower was c...

Re: UP Mines Question

The Eagle Mine was expected to have a 20 year life when opened. Additional exploration identified another ore body nearby and Lundin has constructed a stope extending to the new ore body. I believe the new development is expected to add another 10 years of life to the mine. Lundin currently states t...

They could do low volume transload business on the track south of the Handyman/Lawncare Service (north of North Dr.). I think that is the track SR indicated where they used to unload drilling pipe and supplies.
The Derrick was adjacent to the short siding on the east side behind Pete’s.

Re: Rumor for Mount Pleasant having a new transloading facility, GLC news

I just looked it up on google map to refresh my memory. OP specifically said between Broadway and Pickard. Tell me where in here it would fit. Unless one of the businesses allow access it’s not happening. https://i.imgur.com/dPXzDHx.jpg I believe the siding behind Pete’s Body Shop can be accessed f...

Re: Rumor for Mount Pleasant having a new transloading facility, GLC news

There’s no way. One side of the tracks in that area is residential and the other is a park. That is incorrect. North of Broadway the line is bordered on the west by a cemetery and the former Ferro stamping plant that I believe houses a number of smaller businesses. On the east side of the tracks li...

Re: Wolverine Brass Grand Rapids?

I had looked at photos of the building at 620 Monroe but it is very different from what is in the photo. But looking at the Sanborn map more closely there are tracks in Bond Ave and in the next block north there is a siding into the Michigan Steel Junk Yard. Across the alley is a building noted hav...

Interesting photo. Thank you for posting. Below is a link to a Sanborn Insurance map. Wolverine Brass is located on Monroe Street across from the Grand Trunk freight house. There appears to be a siding running down Bond Street on the east side of the factory. https://www.loc.gov/resource/g4114gm.g04...

On the other hand, NS was good back then because the dude running the railroad (Wick Moorman) actually worked his way up the ranks for both the Southern AND Norfolk Southern, so he actually had railroading experience, unlike the hedgefund guys at the helm right now. Re: National Rail Safety Legislation announced

There is another facet to providing notice of hazmat shipments.
What will first responders do with the information?
In rural areas with volunteer fire services to who does the notice go?
Will fire services need to add staff to receive and monitor the notices?
