Re: Consumers Energy donates locomotive to Coopersville and Marne Railway

Would you look a regulatory agent in the eye and say "but it's only 2 tons!", yes or no? Don’t completely fill the fuel tank HAHA! Okay that was pretty good  Track ratings typically are designed around the idea that everything below the limit is 100% ok without review. Basically, they’d want t...

Re: Consumers Energy donates locomotive to Coopersville and Marne Railway

At 136 tons, the engine is only 2 tons heavier than the max you cite. Yeah, its over the old number, but hardly a huge deal ultimately. What matters now are the present bridge ratings. The SL144 also has a longer wheelbase, measuring 39'3" compared to the EMD SW9's 30'0". That will distribute out t...

is the Coopersville and Marne still getting occassional freight traffic still, or did that dry up?
Standard Lumber is still an active customer. I think they get switched 2-3 times a week?
It's down to approximately twice a month now.

Re: Consumers Energy donates locomotive to Coopersville and Marne Railway

Those still within the RR have said it weighs in the ballpark of 136 tons as it was fitted with extra ballasting, whether that's true or not I don't really know. However I do recall that the Ottawa sub (CPMY trackage West of Penn Jct) is only rated for 268,000lbs and the GTW set that limit back in t...

Re: East Palestine, Ohio Major NS Derailment

Macrotends.net shows NS having 30,000 employees in 2015, then making a steady decline to a low of 18,000 in 2021 and up to 19,000 in 2022. In the same period FRA data shows train accidents of all causes except grade crossings were up and down 2015-2017 but somewhat steady overall. Then climbing to ...

I'm not defending Norfolk Southern or shielding them from liability, but there's just as much that can go wrong trying to pin blame on an organization as there is to absolve them.

What can go wrong in holding NS accountable?

Re: East Palestine, Ohio Major NS Derailment

An organization can be overall poorly managed and still not really be responsible for an incident. So far, there isn’t much to suggest that NS did anything negligent here. The Class Ones can be argued to be poorly managed in many ways, but honestly, engineering is not one of them. Wrecking trains i...

Keeping the cabbages on the PM also means keeping push-pull equipped Superliners captive to it as well. Are all Horizon/Amfleet cars push-pull equipped? I think a good majority are, but as for equipment right now all organization of MU/nonMU cars is off the table. Amtrak is swiping [semi]-captive A...

Re: Iowa Pacific Hoosier State Chicago Facility

AFAIK, Amtrak darn near bullied them out of existence partially because it was a pain in the ass for IPH maintenance employees to enter the property in Chicago. I believe they used the tracks in the yard where they put private cars, out near the river. As for the faculty, who knows. All the IPH guys...

They don’t tend to let the ITCS units stray too far from Chicago. Haha, you'd think! Then somehow every time a winter storm hits and the MDOT/IDOT P42s are needed, they're in..... Who knew that cancelling recurrent certifications of brake equipment on your passenger fleet during a temporary slump in traffic would end up putting you years behind on inspections, and thus short of equipment.
Amtrak is out-CPMY'ing the CPMY.

Re: G&W EPA Settlement, 88 locomotives to be destroyed

This could conceivably drive up prices for used smaller locomotives for independent shortlines. Not could, it will. “According to the DOJ, the consent decree, which also requires G&W remove from service and permanently destroy 88 older locomotives that are not required to meet any EPA emission stan...
