Re: New Buffalo MI Railfanning Action
I'm doing a trip to New Buffalo MI within the next few weeks, how much action does CSX and the Amtrak Michigan Line (NS Locals) get? I know not all of the CSX trains on the GR Sub run that far south, but I'm just trying to get an idea of what I can expect. If someone could help me out that would be...

Re: Highway construction at Trowbridge
Fwiw the requirement for a flagman/EIC typically is triggered if the contractor will have “the potential to foul” the track, which is usually around the 25’ mark from the nearest track for a contractor. So if they’re driving anything, lifting anything or otherwise working within that zone, you’ll se...

Re: Highway construction at Trowbridge
Wondering if the construction will make CSX and CN crawl through East Lansing with slow orders. I think track speed on both lines is 40 mph. I'm willing to bet money CN and CSX will be moving through at 25 mph or less through the construction zone. But thank the lord that is getting fixed, Ive gone...

Re: What is this track?
That’s exactly what it is, a split rail derail. I’ll be a bit of a track snob and point out that this is usually referred to as a “switch point derail” since it has both points like a regular switch. That contrasts with a “split rail derail” which only has the switch point on one side. The full swi...

Re: The port of monroe-containers?
Container shipping by water, even at low volume, is still usually cheaper than overland options. There’s just so many steps, people and infrastructure needed for overland transportation that water doesn’t require. So it can be surprisingly competitive. I have no idea on the actual economics of this ...

Re: The port of monroe-containers?
is it not more than a minor detail to overlook if you plan to do international containers when the the welland canal shuts down for several months during the winter? The idea is to be cheaper and bypass the east coast ports. I'm sure all of these containers would be drayed direct to the customer. I...

Re: CSX Locomotive Roster News, Updates & Information Thread
YN2 leaders are pretty common on the ACSES-required lines on the Northeast (in New York on the Hudson Line east of the river, around NYC, and in Massachusetts and southern Maine), as several of the upper 400-series AC4400CW's (which are pretty much the only ACSES PTC-equipped road engines) are stil...

Re: CN says goodbye to Baraga
Part of the problem is that CN will want higher margins, greater volume, and consistency than a shortline would typically tolerate. There was a study undertaken awhile back about pulpwood transportation around the UP and northern Wisconsin and the team found little rhyme or reason to the freight rai...

Re: CN says goodbye to Baraga
maybe because cn kept the line to l'anse? and it wouldn't be profitable for someone to operate an isolated section of a couple miles of unused track? no filing to abandon has been filed with the stb. wisconsin central had filed and received discontinuance of service. Correct, they can just take the...

Re: CN says goodbye to Baraga
Sounds like CN is pulling the plug on the mothballed section of railroad between L’Anse and Baraga. Per a post on the YooperRails group on Facebook the town was notified last month. How long has it been since anything even went to Baraga? 10-15 years maybe? Wondered why the line wasn’t offered to W...

Re: South Shore Double Track
According to the Double Track NWI newsletter of 3/1/24, they are running test trains now. I presume that this means all of the new signals and switches are active? Yes. CTC and grade crossings were first. PTC is ongoing. Through service is supposed to resume in early April per the last board meeting.

I’ve got to imagine that “investigating” the “potential security threat” of photography is probably the most exciting thing to hit them when it happens. Otherwise their days are probably full of...

Re: West Michigan short line TLU
I think every single report should be its own thread. I don’t wanna sift through all of the other updates to find my train.
Nevermind that it’ll just clutter up the list of threads rather than the threads themselves. We wouldn’t want to apply any logic here.

Expect the signals to be typically located at easy to reach locations like at grade crossings. Ain’t nobody got time to hyrail or walk to this stuff!

Re: Future of the Plymouth Sub/Grand Rapids Sub
I wonder if the CP ever wishes they still had the lines from Minneapolis though Sault Ste Marie to Sudbury to Toronto. I would think that it would be shorter and certainly less congested than through Chicago and Windsor. I've wondered this also, but my understanding is that the traffic via Chicago ...
