Re: NS West Virginia Secondary-Columbus Oh to Alloy WV
CSX is giving them fits about the trackage rights at Hobson, saying that CSX has no role in the lease agreement and while NS has trackage rights, WATCO does not. It's going to the STB.

It's my understanding that the depot had a bay window at one time but a derailment damaged the building and the bay window wasn't rebuilt.

When the signal system was installed on the New Castle District, the absolute signal was erected at Pleasant Center Road, the next road to the south. It was destroyed in a truck/train collision sometime in the late 80's, as best as I recall. When a new absolute signal was put up, the signal at Winte...

My comments would be true for the NKP/N&W/NS period of operation of the W&LE portion of the railroad.

Re: Who operated the W&LE east of Bellevue in the N&W era?
It was a separate seniority district, based out of Brewster, OH, with locals operating out of Norwalk and Toledo. Bellevue didn't have rights on the Wheeling. It wasn't like today's world where, in many places, the seniority districts are huge. To add to that, the former P&WV was yet another separat...

Re: Railroad Capacity-Only part of the story
Back when hiring wasn't the (sarcasm) science that they've tried to make it into, the railroads never seemed to hire until an increase in business became almost overwhelming. More than once, shortly after they hired, business would fall off and the new help would be furloughed. Now, they seem to ove...

Because the Nickel Plate intended to double track more of today's Fostoria District, there are plenty of spots where the roadbed is wide and bridges were built to hold two tracks. The Depression came and the double track project was never completed. You used to be able to pick it out by seeing how f...

Re: Railroad Capacity-Only part of the story
I don't relish sounding like a company man but when there's not enough business to keep all of the workforce employed, what do you do? In 2008, business was slow and the railroad furloughed people. When you are only working three or four days in a two week period, I suppose the only answer is a guar...

Re: Malinta Tower
There was a man who lived in Malinta named Jim Sharp, a NKP/N&W operator, who was a operator at Malinta Tower for many years, until the N&W folded the operation. He then completed his railroad career by driving to Lima daily and working there at South Lima. I visited Malinta Tower sometime around 19...

It's accurate, lease became effective on merger day, October 16, 1964.MagnumForce wrote:May or may not be accurate
When the N&W and the C&O were talking merger, some N&W units had N&W in yellow on the engineroom doors instead of NORFOLK AND WESTERN. This didn't last long but there were a few around back then.

Sorry, but that simply isn't true. The lease became effective on October 16, 1964. There was earlier agreement but nothing was done until the merger date of the NKP. The Pittsburgh and West Virginia was also leased at this time.

Re: Unknown railway
The Eastern Branch of the T&OC did not go to Columbus, it went via Bucyrus, the terminal, to Thurston, OH, east of Columbus in Fairfield County. As far as I know, much of the coal traffic once went this way. It was abandoned in stages starting with the New York Central prior to the PRR merger but Co...

You try to grab orders like that and you'll risk missing the orders or losing your thumb.
Re: Carey, OH
By 1972 and I believe earlier, perhaps as early as 1969, based on what others told me, the diamond at Continental had been removed. There were connections that tied into both sides off of the Fostoria District. There was a local based at Continental, throughout the early to mid-1970's, there was alw...
Re: Carey, OH
I 'think' the Cloverleaf (at least from Continental on to Toledo) was stricken from the N&W before the AC&Y was. The Blue Bird senic train was operating out of Grand Rapids by the late 1970's (I remember riding the train - behind the steamer as part of a school field trip in grade school), and the ...

Isn't it more likely that Sunrise chose to make Clyde their grain terminal and told NS, this is where it is going to be?

I did blow it up and I see what I see, no ghost, just the usual stuff. OTOH, maybe it's John Marty, staying as close to the Wabash as he can.
