Re: Kingsbury Indiana - $6M loan to replace track
While the tracks the South Shore use to the industrial park switch, are ex-NKP the track that runs between them and the CN on the north side is actually the ex-Wabash line from Toledo, Oh, to Chicago, Il. The Wabash is the 3.37 miles from where their lead curves into the industrial park on the nort...

This “performance mortgag...

Re: Delray Tower Shutdown / To Be Torn Down
So everything needs to go to a museum? Perhaps not everything, but enough of a representative sample that history isn't lost to old photographs and the memories of the dead. I prefer working museums with items preserved in "like new" condition. Unfortunately that requires money. Many of the items t...

Re: Michigan Southern customers in Sturgis
I believe the tankcars seen around Sturgis are for storage. As far as I know, only Abbots and IP get service near the diamond area. The tank cars should be Abbott Labs. Some sort of oil or syrup that they use to make their products. They would keep one connected at the plant and swap it out on occa...

Re: Delray Tower Shutdown / To Be Torn Down
I'm sure there are bad officers in most agencies. There are also bad railfans. To pretend that one side is always good or bad is short sighted. I'm probably overcautious when railfanning. Where other fans might see a "public" gravel lot I know someone owns it ... and may not appreciate my presence. ...

Re: Lansing-North Lansing rail museum?
The NPS got them from the railroad ... they were the first owners beyond CSS&SB for most of the cars, and still own quite a few of the ones in museums.Clay320 wrote:We bought them from the national park service, don't know where the NPS got them from.

Re: Lansing-North Lansing rail museum?
There are three CSS&SB cars in Michigan - The Southern Michigan Railroad in has retired cars 1 and 36 and the Michigan Transit Museum owns retired car 11 (formerly owned by East Troy). 24 cars have been scrapped ... 34 are in museums (some operable, a pair in Iowa being used as salvage). 8 cars are ...

Re: Future Passenger Rail Routes?
Amtrak to Chicago is fine if you're going to downtown Chicago or don't mind finding other transportation to finish the trip. I can beat the South Shore out of South Bend to Chicago and even beat the price (including parking at the South Shore's downtown station) if I take my wife along. I'm a railfa...

Re: Future Passenger Rail Routes?
The original poster of this topic was interested in service to Mackinac and TC but I wouldn't even bother to dream about such a thing. The population density isn't there. Nor are the tracks. Sounds realistic ... although I'd rather look at existing travel statistics along a corridor than just densi...

Improve Chicago-Kalamazoo-Detroit ... necessary to keep it alive. Add Grand Rapids - Lansing - Detroit ... possible. Extend Detroit - Pontiac to Saginaw/Bay City ... possible but less likely. Connect Detroit - Toledo ... possible (perhaps as a run through of the Grand Rapids-Detroit service or a Sag...

Re: Police Sting Targets Railroad Crossing Violators
I would like to see more information on the first crossing ... the one in the original story that was mentioned at the end of this one. Here ya go. http://www.wnem.com/local-video/index.html?grabnetworks_video_id=4448613 Thanks. The original story explains that other crossing better ... and the sit...

Re: Police Sting Targets Railroad Crossing Violators
I would like to see more information on the first crossing ... the one in the original story that was mentioned at the end of this one. How often are the gates down with no train present? Is the train visible from the crossing when these drivers are going around the gates? Is there a curve in the li...

Re: Marion Branch - Changes Coming UPDATE 2/9/11
That and its tough to dig signal cable, run lines, install stuff, when its winter and the ground is frozen. Especially with the snow and ice we've been having. NICTD (South Shore Line) has been working through the winter on their CTC project (replacing ABS signals between Michigan City and South Be...
