Re: Graphic Packaging to Possibly Consolidate Plants
Checker occupied the area bounded by Mosel Ave to the north, Pitcher to the west, NYC to the east, and Graphic Packaging to the south. The NYC is the track that runs past BO. Once it straightens out north of Patterson St, it made a beeline north. The GTW was adjacent to the NYC from BO to Patterson,...

Re: Graphic Packaging to Possibly Consolidate Plants
Good question. I don't know if the remnant of the GTW at Checker was owned by Checker or GTW. Up until shortly before Checker closed, the tracks still crossed Mosel Ave and there was a siding for Fletcher Paper (last served in mid/late 90s). So I would think GTW still owned at least some of the trac...

Great news for the Elk and the NYC North Industrial. I hope this plant will ship outbound by rail...
Last time I saw a boxcar at the Graphic Packaging plant on Patterson was in the mid 90s, and even then I don't know if it was an outbound load.

There are some aerials going back to the 1950s on historicaerials.com. Not much detail but you may find them interesting.

CSX thru traffic via Grand Rapids
I happened across what was apparently the regular eastbound road train out of Grand Rapids near South Lyon this morning about 8am (Q328?) - aprox 125 cars. There was a short cut of 8-10 loaded auto racks. Is this overhead traffic, or imports destined for Detroit for unloading?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Update on CSX Pleasant Street Tower
PM passenger trains from the west went around the curve to the north at Sunnyside (long before there was a wye there) and crossed the Grand River twice, once on home rails, then swinging onto the PRR (roughly where the GVSU parking garage is today) and crossing that is now the "Blue Bridge" and ont...

Try searching "benton harbor" here: https://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/
After selecting Benton Harbor, MI, you have to scroll down to see the charts.
Lots of detail on the rail lines across a variety of years in the early-mid 1900s

LC is on the old lumber yard spur. Cool, thanks. Good to see that spur is getting used again. Last time I saw lumber received there was probly around 2000, before the place closed up. LC Howard sure has/had a lot of locations. Do you know if they are still using the old James River plant on the nor...

The one I've seen in Ypsilanti was red and did not have Amtrak's name on it.

That spur was put in under NS for Mueller Plastics, but Mueller closed up right about that time and I don't think they ever received a carload.NS3322 wrote:Is MANN+HUMMEL off of Sprinkle Rd. an active customer?

Re: A Future for the BO Tower
If the goal is a cafe that supports a tower, at the crossing of the GTW with 131 might be a better bet. Of course I have no idea on availability of a parcel etc., and it would need to be moved from the Grand Elk ROW by truck.

Re: A Future for the BO Tower
Good luck, I hope this is successful. I would hate to see the tower demolished. I like the idea of moving it to the diamond at Schoolcraft but its hard to imagine there being enough visitors to support a cafe, or even someone to just be there. I could see if working if the town of Schoolcraft consid...
