Re: New OWLS Diamond Installed at Milan

Give it a year or two, the sounds will come back, once the Annie runs enough trains to grove the high speed routes rail head. I'd imagine the one out at Schoolcraft is getting pretty beat up. Yep, the OWLS diamond at Durand makes plenty of noise from Flint Sub movements at speed. Those flanges cut ...

Re: Durand MI May 14 2016

There's a train show at the middle school Sunday afternoon, in case you're interested in breaking up the mid-day lull in the action...but if you're committed to Saturday, it won't help. Just be aware that Durand closes some of the streets in town for the festivities, which can make getting to the s...

Anyone catch the SLRG (Iowa Pacific) Derby Special leaving CUS today? Wondering what the AMTK 850 Hooser State consist is with this section attached. I'm staking out MP 41.1 on the LIRC in Columbus IN tonight... hoping for a classic consist of E-units and streamlined varnish in ICRR orange and choco...

Re: First Siemens Charger Rolls Out of the Shop

I kind of like it, although a bit biased with MDOT getting some (and my current client providing the "Hedgehog" prime movers). As a passenger I'm more interested in Nippon-Sharyo fixing the bi-level engineering issue so we can get some new varnish to run behind these PNT-CHI. That's where our seats ...

Re: DC Metro may shut down for months

It's always "sexy" to build it (and for Pols to pose for photo ops with a shovel, or break a bottle of Champagne over the front of a locomotive) but then everyone moves on, and cuts budgets when it comes to ongoing maintenance. Remember the bad-old days in the '70s with the freight rails, and "defer...

Iowa Pacific move on the LIRC?

As I'm working during the week in Columbus, IN this Pullman Rail Journey's ad caught my eye: https://www.travelpullman.com/ride/kentucky-derby/ Here's the details on the southbound movement/schedule: Day 1 – Wednesday, May 4: Leave Chicago 5:45 pm, as part of the Hoosier State Arrive Indianapolis at...

Re: Collision in Marysville

Maybe it's time to go back to 'DS' (distant switch) signals to warn approaching trains of an open switch a mile or so ahead, whatever is the maximum stopping distance at max tonnage and speed. I have an old PC-CR rule book that showed these in use at that time. Of course PTC will make this all moot,...

Was in high school that day (Class of '88) and remember the TV on in the school commons showing the live coverage of the disaster. We all stopped to watch in awe... having been born after any previous NASA fatal accidents, and the Shuttle program was so "routine" (more like scheduled airline flights...

Re: Can I walk up to vickers diamond or is this trespassing

I'd avoid the diamond and indeed any railroad right of way, anywhere. Having said that Vickers offers much better watching opportunities than it did before the overpass was completed. Before, the only place to park was on the shoulder of Wales near the car detailing business. They didn't want anyon...

"It's been an honor to work with such a great engineer like you." Brought a tear to my eye. As a fellow railroader I wish these men and women the best. It's never good to see an entire line shutdown. This story made me wonder about the crews on the old Milwaukee Road western divisions during ...

CP 487 can sort of be seen (the location of the switch heaters is the biggest clue to the layout). CP 490 crossovers remain unconnected (switches in plac...

I'm on 364 at the moment in Flint - the Santa train was held on the Throughfare at the CP Flint x-over for us. Homewood told him he'll follow us east out of town on Main 2 once he gets the signal. First time in "God knows when" you can see a " following passenger (section)" on the old GTW MAIN!

Columbus IN LIRC yard history

I'm headed to Columbus next week for work and was scoping out local rail activity online for my off hours. Looking over Google Maps' satellite view I see the Louisville and Indiana has a neat "pocket-sized" yard north of town - one that could be easily modeled to scale. Was this yard built by the L&...

Next month on the weekend of December 12-13, the Great Train Expo is coming to Novi's Suburban Collection Showplace (Former Rock Financial Showplace). I'm hoping this is going to be a better show than the terrible one this past winter. Does anyone know if any good layouts will be at this show or is...
