Re: Traffic on NS Chicago line & B&O ?
The Chicago Line tends to be busier at night and early in the morning. During that timeframe CSX would be busier, but that's not to say the Chicago Line would be totally dead. The NS road channel from Toledo to Elkhart is 160.800. 160.620 is not used on the Chicago Line until Elkhart going west towa...

Re: New connection near Vermilion
It looks like it will be open very soon after driving by this new connection last Thursday. I'm fascinated to see how much this changes the operations for NS. The trains that go from the Chicago Line to the B Line via the Cloggsville Line and Rockport Yard will now stay on the B Line up to the Verm...

Re: NS. So what is next.
Based on the phone number in the timetable, it looks like probably in the North KC offices. Based on a BNSF GO effective 6/25, the NS dispatcher controls the entire joint trackage with BNSF from Maxwell to CP 224. NS DS phone number is in area code 217, so that must be in Decatur, meaning that the ...

Re: VHS to DVD conversion
DVD recorders had a brief heyday in the mid 2000s, and they can still be found on eBay. Any "name" brand like JVC, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony, or Samsung will do fine. Just take the RCA wires from your VCR and plug them into the inputs on the DVDR. Blank discs can still be found just about everywhere....

Re: NS. So what is next.
The KN operator still controls CTC in the Kansas City District west of South Liberty, but you are probably right that these positions are quite rare. There is also the CJ dispatcher for the CR&I, which is really like an operator. Where is the KN operator physically located? In the couple of times I...

Does the Landers operator still control the Manhattan District (Metra Southwest Service line), or have those duties finally been conveyed to Metra?

Re: A Question For Antenna Buffs
My full wave loop antenna is positioned 30' below a ridge that is approximately 1400' from my indoor location. I receives a DD 12 miles away. How is this possible? VHF propagation is line of sight. Whatever your antenna can see is how far it can cover. The horizon is its limit. Is the detector loca...

Re: Dunkirk Ohio
Tower's still there. As a typical overbuilt Pennsy facility it will outlive the apocalypse. Dunkirk's not very busy. In 24 hours there might be 10 trains. Your best bet would be to start in Ft. Wayne or Lima in the morning, see if you can get an eastbound NS (usually an oil train), and chase it.

Re: A Question For Antenna Buffs
Definitely need to get the antenna outside. One of these on a ventpipe on the roof would do very well, or even if you can't get it outside it would still do well in the attic (providing your siding or roofing material isn't metal). http://www.jpole-antenna.com/shop/railroad-band-noaa-weather-160-162...

I've been watching live rail cams and looks like Coal City is has an active rail line. 60 to 80 trains a day and they move going though there. Mostly intermodal some mixed but rather active. Check it out on You tube. Yes. Chillicothe Sub, former ATSF Transcon. It's busier now than it ever was durin...

Supposedly the block swapping of intermodal that went on at NWOC is to take place at Willard.
