Re: Napoleon, Defiance and Western: The Definitive Thread

Ran into them coming back to Defiance on 9/10. Short train and mostly boxcars. My first time seeing them in person.

Re: Fall color photos this year

All great shots, Loyd, but the two that really stand out to me are the second shots in each post. The waterfall photo is beautiful. Have those falls been whored out or were you able to find a unique view of them? High Falls is only accessible by a once weekly train ride out of Elkins or an 11 mile ...

We had some fantastic color around WV this year, and I enjoyed the brief 2 week period to shoot it.

Re: Fall color photos this year

I didn't do a whole lot with trains this fall, but here's three of the better ones taken on a charter on the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad between Spruce, and Elkins, WV.

Re: F Units in Freight service

West Virginia Central (Durbin and Greenbrier Valley) in North Central WV uses their F's for freight.

Re: Thurmond, West Virginia

Thurmond is a neat town, but train traffic across that entire line is light. Light compared to Ohio, yes :) The line still sees 16-20 trains per day, even with the down coal business. Thurmond isn't the place to go for notch 8 hard pulling action. That would be better suited for locations such as W...

Re: A good lens step up for a canon rebel t3??

Spend 80-100 bucks and pick up a Canon EF 70-210 f4 that was built in Japan (denoted by a gold JCII sticker).

I did, and that 25 year old lens runs circles around any other non 'L' Canon zoom, and is on par IQ wise to the 70-200 f4 L, which I was going to buy.

Re: Photoshop Elements 7.0 Question

If you're skipping the initial editing in the RAW convertor, you're missing out big time. You might as well just shoot jpeg.

There's no way that I know of to bypass the raw editor in photoshop, and no reason I can think of for doing so IMO.

The sky is great, so why include all that boring ground in the composition? May have been a mis-click reason. It's a bad crop in my book.

Re: Underexposed= I needed to Up the ISO?

ISO 100 is where you need to be on that camera for most night shots, so I'd suggest opening up the aperture to f4 - f6.3, and try longer exposures. Successful shots at night require knowledge, trial and error testing, and some luck. I think these two examples looked fine on the preview screen of the...

Re: Private Car Question

When carrying more than zero passengers, you will be restricted to Amtrak only, only on specific routes, and only to specific destinations. Once you pony up for a fortune in insurance, and all the other fees with Amtrak, you'll pay between $1.60 to $3.25 per mile, depending on several things. Loyd L.
