GP59
From RailroadfanWiki
The Electromotive Division GP59 is a 4 axle, 3,000 HP diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD from 1985 and 1989. The GP59 utilizes a turbo-charged 12 cylinder 710G3A engine rated at 3,000 HP, and was offered as a less powerful, more fuel efficient version of the GP60. It was the only locomotive (aside from the passenger F59PH and F59PHI) built by EMD to date to use the 12 cylinder 710 engine. 36 GP59's were built, all for Norfolk Southern, where they remain in service today. NS has painted one unit, GP59 #4610, into a Southern Railway "Cresent" style heritage paint scheme. EMD also built 3 GP59 Demonstrators, EMDX 8-10, which featured bulbous streamlined cabs like those found on the GP60 demonstrators. All 3 were later purchased by NS.
