GP49
From RailroadfanWiki
The Electromotive Division GP49 is a 4 axle, 2,800 HP diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD in 1983. It used a turbo-charged 12 cylinder 645F3B engine rated at 2,800 HP, and was offered as a less powerful, more fuel efficient version of the GP50. Externally, the unit looked like GP50 offered at the same time and the later GP59, except the GP49 had only 2 radiator fans. Only 9 GP49's were built, all going to Alaska Railroad and becoming ARR 2801-2809. The units featured gargantuan snowplows, winterization hatches, marker lights and gyra lights for use in the arctic conditions that AAR operates in. In 2007, 5 were sold to Helm Finanicial Leasing. Southern Railway had 6 GP39X's that were converted to GP49's later on, and after many years of service they were sold to Florida commuter agency Tri-Rail who rebuilt them with HEP and runs them on passenger trains.
