I suggest you go over to Radio Shack and purchase the POLICE CALL Frequency Guide. The out of date one costs jsut a few bucks and it has all the Railraod Frequencies used in Michigan, polcie departments, hospitals, buslines, anything you can think of including hotels, resturaunts, etc.

Listened to MMRR today on CH 154.600. Now once I get my license to carry my scanner, I will go chase them, knowing where they are.

hmmm...all official railroad channels are between 160.215 and 161.565....
maybe they were using ham radios or other equipment on those lines.

159.810-161.565 and all channels between are the official channels. The first six or so are reserved for canadian railroads.

According to Mike's post above, you were listening to this:
154.600 FCC - Mobiles MMRR

Yes you do police will confiscate it if you are pulled over , even if it is turned off and in the trunk( I always thought how the heck do you get it home from the store?) Anyways all you have to do is fill out a form and mail it in to recieve a licence takes about 3 months though.
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/com ... _7.pdf

here is a link to the form

The Michigan law has just been changed but has not gone into effect yet. You will be able to carry scanners as long as you are not usung them while doing a crime.

A lot of other states have these laws and the best way to get around them is to get an amateur radio license. This federal license trumps all other state and local laws concerning scanners. The license is not hard to get and opens up another fun hobby, as well as a means to keep in contact with other railfans when chasing.
