Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Better add all the CSX 'true' AC6000's on that list. They'll be cycling through to get their 6000 hp prime movers removed for the Evolution series 4400 hp engine like the 5200-5500's have.
I love those engines...they didn't sound like a locomotive when they went by, they sounded like a jet.

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Unless something has changed, the 6000's are getting 6000HP GEVO prime movers, not 4400. Unless I am reading something wrong.

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Now, I could be wrong, but I don't think GE offers the Evolution Series prime move in a 6000 hp option. I'd heard they were getting their prime movers changed out, essentially making them an ES44AC. The GE was the only marginally successful 6000hp Prime Mover. EMD's never produced the results expected, and even the GE HDL had its issues (blowing crankcases and a difficult repair). EMD and GE had said they were scrapping the 6000 hp programs because demands wasn't there, and 4000 to 4400 hp fit most railroad applications (which fits what the railroads have been buying).sd70accsxt700 wrote:Unless something has changed, the 6000's are getting 6000HP GEVO prime movers, not 4400. I just hope they leave those great dynamic brakes ALONE. The ES series dynamic brakes at VERY lacking, but those AC6000's would bring even the heaviest train to a complete stop with dynamic brakes.

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Scratch 4621 off the list of SD40s. It's been retired after serving CSX, Chessie System and Western Maryland for an astounding FORTY year career, being built in November 1968.
This means that, for the second time, 4617 has outlived its own kin. I think that unit should get a name for this.... "The Survivor."
And Russ, I've read in a few places that GE was developing a 6,000hp GEVO Prime mover. I've also seen what Matt posted on Trainorders and other sites in the last few months.

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
The 4621 made at least one trip to Michigan in the past decade, here it was a particularly rare sight at the Rouge on November 23, 2002. It is lettered as the "Osborne Yard Bowl Locomotive" From Osborne Yard in Louisville, Ky. Seen here in scheme 2, with only ends modified, it is a former Western Maryland unit.
PS, please send that SD45-2 up here to Michigan to work one of those MofW trains running between Toledo and Grand Rapids!

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
SD40 4621 has been retired as have GP39's 4287, 4299, SD40-2s 8142, 8414, 8472, 8818. This leaves SD40 4617 to be the last straight SD40 on the CSX roster.
Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
As Bob M. mentioned earlier this week (I will post it again here), 4 B30-7's have been retired: 5507, 5529, 5569, 5580. 3 B36-7's have been retired as well: 5849, 5866, 5885. This leaves 3 B30-7's (5512, 5575, 5581) and 28 B36-7's
Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Scratch the 5854 off the list. It has been retired.
BTW the 5859 is in the GR area for the T-4 team. You guys might want to keep an eye out for it.

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Interesting! I guess now that it has ditchlights (it didn't have them until a couple years ago) that it can actually lead trains I also notice they moved the horn back to the radiator fan area. That must be a recent change. On the pics you see right after it was repainted from C&O, it still had the horns up by the headlight.
Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
I hope a shortline picks up those 38's. Even the SD38's would work out well somewhere.
PatC created a monster, 'cause nobody wants to see Don Simon no more they want AARR I'm chopped liver, well if you want AARR this is what I'll give ya, bad humor mixed with irrelevant info that'll make you roll your eyes quicker than a ~Z~ banhammer...

I don't know how recent. Nick took that back in July....csxt4617 wrote:Interesting! Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
Anytime a locomotive cycles through the shop for work, they've been moving the horn back onto the long hood area to comply with the FRA rules about in cab noise and the like. Avon had been doing horn relocations at the rate of 1 a day, but with a general lack of stuff to do, they were up to 3 a day.

7 more B36-7's have bitten the big one. 5812, 5834, 5851, 5856, 5894, 5910 and 5914 have been retired. This leaves 21 active B36-7's on the roster.
Also of note, 4 RCPHG4's have been retired; 9135, 9151, 9248 and 9252.

All remaining B30-7's and B36-7's will be retired within the next 90 days.

Re: CSX Endangered Locomotives List
They will keep their 6,000 HP prime movers, and from talking to other railfans that have seen them recently, they sound the same and have retained their paint.CSX_CO wrote:Better add all the CSX 'true' AC6000's on that list.
