Anyone know why GE designated their old switchers by tonnage and all other companies (that I know of) did it by horsepower?

Don, the way I understand it is the GE 44 tonner was labled as such to skirt a union requirement that engines of 45 tons or more had to have a "Fireman/Asst.Engineer". I think that the rest of the small GE switchers were just cataloged by weight after that to keep a consistant line of products.
